Urban Acres Horse Rescue "Pastures in the shadow of the city". The pastures are gone, but the little acreage in the middle of the neighborhood in North Omaha is still there.

We started rescuing and rehabilitating horses in the early '90's, and continue to do so.

Buyers BEWARE!
I was recently messaged about a horse someone was buying off a FB page called LEWIS OSCAR or OSCAR LEWIS HORSES. Apparently a couple here in Nebraska were on his site and saw a pretty Palomino that he was “GIVING AWAY”. All they had to do was pay a $300 fee and sign some paperwork. Once that was done, they could pick her up and she would be theirs.
HE GAVE URBAN ACRES AND OUR ADDRESS for pickup!!!! We have no idea who he is and do not condone that he is running a scam and including us!
One of our volunteers contacted him about a horse and was told Lewis Oscar was from Scottsbluff, Ne. For all we know he is in another country.
Don’t do business with this man! He is a scammer just trying to get your money.
Louis Oscar must’ve realized we were on to him because he blocked our volunteer.
If you feel inclined, go to his site and call him out. There are plenty of good horses around so don’t give your money away to a crook!

We are getting ready to pick up donated hay baled. Austin Robinson, licensed electrician, is installing a new motor for the hay elevator. We need to replace the pulley and belt, then we are good to go.

The rain has stopped a lot of volunteers and visitors from coming to the rescue for the last couple of weeks so here are some earlier pictures of visitors from Open Door Mission, ILC, QLI and a new friend, Radiant, that brought her baby and son, Keani to ride Buddy on his birthday. We said goodbye to Onnika and her mom Jenna, that have been here while Onnika was recovering from an injury.
We are planning to do Hug A Horse and pony rides as soon as the rain stops and the ground dries.

Looking for someone that has knowledge about hay elevators. We had the motor fixed a couple of years ago and it has just hung on the wall ever since.
We tried to use it about a month ago. There was little power to the belt that runs the bales to the loft and was very sluggish. Having little knowledge about this equipment, I can’t tell if it is the motor or if maybe the belt needs oiling and will run better if it’s been serviced.
If it’s the motor, we need help removing it from the belt so it can go to the shop.
The rescue was donated hay and we want to put it up now that the weather is getting cooler.
Any help will be appreciated!

Anyone interested in doing some “Weed Therapy?
Nothing clears your head like pulling w**ds and gives satisfaction like looking at a group of flowers, shrubs or vegetables in a clear space with room to grow after a job well done.
Now that the temperature has dropped we will be looking to clear some of these areas at the rescue.
Text or message if you are wanting to come help clean up the acreage for the horses.

When is this heat going to break? The flies are divebombing the horses, goats, chicken coop and everyone working so hard to take care of the rescue this week. NOTHING IS WORKING to control these flies. Rose has taken it the worst - from flies biting her foot and then stomping to get rid of them. We’ve been through 3 sets of boots and she won’t keep them on. At this point fly spray and fly traps are not working, garlic and clarify blocks don’t help at all. Does anyone have a tried and true method to keep them away? It’s never been this bad! We need some good ideas.

Another REALLY HOT week and our volunteers still showed up.
Rose injured her foot and hoof. She couldn’t walk. Our Farrrier Scott showed up and it wasn’t a problem that a trim could fix so he suggested I call Dr. Katie Higgins. She found an injury inside the hoof under foot and an infection on the side (ankle) of same foot. Antibiotics, Bute and fly boots made a big difference! Ruth and Dalton worked with her and all she would tolerate was the front boots and no fly mask. She is doing much better today, thanks to everyone.
ODM showed up today and the men worked the horses brushing and helping feed. Crystal and Joaquin brought her daughter to see the horses and chickens. Our new volunteer David, a Creighton student was here early and left for a rodeo in his home town.
We had very few visitors this week due to the heat and are looking forward to cooler days!

This Saturday morning we had a great volunteer turnout: Alice, Mark, Eugene, Therese, David, Ruth, Dalton and Freya. We put up 40 bags of feed, fed horses, goats, chickens and Marco. The riding lawn mower tires arrived and were installed, a spot that always washes away got filled with donated dirt, flowers got watered, we started taking apart the collapsed shelter and gathered a bunch of rocks to help with w**d control in the garden. Looks like we’ll maybe catch up by winter! 😱 Cleve from Heartland Lawns mowed and did a beautiful job! Wish we could do as well with the w**ds!!

Also, we are looking for someone with concrete skills to help us replace the chicken coop floor. We need a new one before winter to protect the birds this winter from the cold. We also need donations to help us pay for materials. Gotta keep the girls warm this winter!
