Talks a bit about the case where Jessica Burgess, a Nebraska mother who faced criminal charges after helping her daughter self-manage her abortion with pills, was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2023 after Meta handed over 300+ MB of data from the accounts of Jessica Burgess and her daughter, Celeste Burgess, including a conversation between the two where Jessica had purchased abortion pills.

By 5pm this evening it’s likely we’ll all be tired of our Uncle’s science denial, our Aunt’s religious platitudes, and our sibling’s political rants, and in dire need of a respite from our relatives! Well, what better way to escape than to have an appointment you just can’t cancel?

Under the Conscience Protection Act, doctors, nurses, orderlies, and even insurance companies can cite their religious beliefs to deny patient care. This could include anything from a nurse refusing to give a needed vaccine to an insurance company refusing to provide coverage for a pregnant woman seeking life-saving care.

You can act now to tell your representatives how much this bill could harm you or others you know.

Today, ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and the PBS series FRONTLINE are jointly publishing an in-depth examination of the response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, using a trove of raw materials from a state investigation whose findings have yet to be released.

Across the country, states require more training to prepare students and teachers for mass shootings than for those expected to protect them. The differences were clear in Uvalde, where children and officers waited on opposite sides of the door.

On August 11th, Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida introduced the National Prayer in School Act, a bill which would blatantly violate the First Amendment and sabotage the separation of religion and government.

His bill essentially says that 'every person' who prevents 'any citizen' from praying in school can be sued by that person. Any school official who tells a teacher they can't lead the class in prayer could be sued. To be clear, prayer is already legal in schools. Kids can pray before math tests. Teachers can pray on their lunch hour. They just can’t do it in front of students or lead students in prayer. That’s the line the Gaetz bill would cross.
