KPF is a NPO that supports the rights of San communities in Africa It does this by raising funds and providing technical and advisory assistance.

Kalahari Peoples Fund (KPF) continues to support the rights
of San communities for health, education, livelihoods, land, and language. Since its beginning in 1973, KPF has responded to several requests for help made by San, Nama, and other rural southern African communities. San and other Kalahari peoples are having to cope with rapidly changing conditions as populations have grown and development programs have expanded. Political, economic, and environmental conditions have changed significantly, and local peoples have undergone transformations in the ways that they live and interact both among themselves and with the governments of the states where they live.

Meet Emily Hixon...one of the amazing humans that makes KPF possible. From coastal Mississippi in the USA, Emily learned about KPF from reading one of our founders, Dr. Richard Lee's, anthropological case study The Dobe Ju/'hoansi which she picked up on a whim at a used bookstore. You never know what will touch your heart! Thank you Emily!

KPF partnered with Creighton University students (Kelly Akoussah, Anna Busch, Erika Germinario, Anjali Jayan) who spent the semester researching questions that might help the organization and the peoples of the Kalahari. Here's a sneak peak of some of the findings:

"When using social media to spread the word about issues that the San are facing in the Kalahari, positive messaging creates more support than crisis messaging."

This really helps us find better ways to share the realities of life in the Kalahari. Thanks so much.

Many indigenous communities walk a tightrope of economic security. The =Khomani San community in South Africa are building these small tourist houses to support a community based tourism project that generates money and preserves tradition. Come visit and stay and learn about how to have affluence without abundance. Stay tuned.

Although Indigenous Peoples comprise only 5% of the world’s population, they safeguard 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. 80%!!!!!

KPF is helping to support artists in the Nyae Nyae region in Namibia create a illustrated book of indigenous plants. Hand drawn and researched. It is wildly beautiful and wildly important. KPF respects and honors Indigenous Peoples' inherent rights and dynamic cultures, deeply and richly interwoven in lands, languages, spiritual traditions, and artistic expression. The Oshivelo HaiIIcom cultural group are celebrating after getting new instruments and traditional skins. They were awarded the honor of Best Cultural Group in the Region for 2022. KPF is proud to support them.

Kalahari Peoples Fund was active in 2023. We were honored to be involved in the village schools projects, soccer tournaments, book projects, language translation and transcription, land rights work, cultural heritage preservation among other things. Your support is so important and all of us at KPF are grateful for you. The San communities need us to be actively engaged.

Our own Megan Biesele's new book is now available. It's amazing and KPF is so honored to continue the work that Megan and others strated. Everyone interested in an honest, intelligent reflection of a life's work should buy this book.

Fifty years after her first fieldwork with Ju/'hoan San hunter-gatherers, anthropologist Megan Biesele has written this exceptional memoir based on personal journals she wrote at the time.

In April of 2023, KPF sponsored a youth soccer league among South Africa’s Khomani San, as a way to help them connect with other Kalahari communities, increase the youth/elder collaboration on the Khomani farms, and give young people a positive activity. Equipment, clothing, and travel costs for the current season was supported through KPF and a highlight was the Easter Soccer Tournament.
