The Closet was student inspired, driven, and encouraged. We have students who walk our halls with unmet needs. Among these students we have some especially brave ones who are willing to seek out help. In particular, I had one humble boy who asked me about where he could go buy a new pair of shoes because the pair he owned were far too big for him. While helping him, I learned that he did not own a winter coat and only had four pairs of socks to his name. We were able to dress him with a coat and provide him with about ten new pairs of winter socks. He was incredibly grateful. With one quick question, we were able to meet several unmet needs. This young man recently moved to the United States from Guatemala. He feared asking for help because he did not want to cause any trouble. His family struggles to provide for everyone at home, so he wished to not burden his family with the need for socks, a coat, or new shoes. However, due to the generosity of our community, we were able to meet those needs with only one question, “How else can we help?” He never understood why people he hardly knew would be so generous to him. It was a new experience.
Some weeks passed and The Closet grew. Donations continued to roll in to have items on hand for students like our boy from Guatemala. As awareness for The Closet has increased among students and families, the stigma associated with what we do has significantly dropped. Students are not judged or questioned for coming by for something. We even have students who are bringing in their unused clothing to make available to their peers. It is beautiful to watch.
A young lady can now come by for feminine hygiene products. Boys and girls can come by for other hygiene products like shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, hair spray, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bar soap, lotion, etc. Teen moms can even receive help with diapers, wipes, clothes, shoes, teething toys, play toys, and sometimes even a larger item.
Our students are cared for beyond their academic needs. We will clothe them. We will feed them (Check out The Packer Pantry - Omaha South HS). We will counsel them. We will help. It may be four years, but we are trying to change the trajectory of their lives for the positive. We want to help break the cycle of poverty. We want to teach our Packers what it looks like to care for each other.
