This month lean into Shake the Field vibes and read “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation” by Jeff Chang. With this book, we’ll learn more about a beloved genre of music that not only has good beats but also has a deep political history.

Trap Democracy came alive at the hands of Mobile Artist, Cherrelle Jefferson Smith (CHERRELLE THE CREATOR). She lets folk tradition speak through bold, symbolic imagery. Mardi Gras, Crawfish, Africatown, she captured Mobile’s essence in one canvas.

At Power on the Line, the piece found its way into new hands, with new walls to breathe on. The moments of our 2026 Trap Democracy Tour memorialized.

“We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes.”

Ella Baker, the woman you are 🙂‍↔️😮‍💨

Baker was a powerful community organizer and civil rights strategist. She made her way into every room, and left when people were blinded by ego and power.

She helped set up the SCLC and served as executive director, influenced the youth to start SNCC, and advised the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.

Fundi was her nickname: a Swahili word for a teacher who passes a craft down to the next generation.

We could talk endlessly about Ella or you could just join us tomorrow for Shake the Field Book Club. All are welcomed, even if you didn’t read. We’ll talk about the illustrious Ella Baker and how we can channel her into today.

Here’s your top of the week roundup for stories to stay hip to in the news.

Gary, Indiana has been without power for over 10 days, and now Memphis has gone dark. Apparently, the U.S. could have a power grid blackout due to weather and aging infrastructure. The FDA list of recalls grows longer by the day— check what you eat. And on top of grocery prices rising, SNAP in Alabama is at risk. Issa Rae again makes history by pioneering more ways for Black creatives to get their stories out. Apparently the U.S. is still trying to acquire Greenland against all their wishes even by deploying a back door. And the government is putting ankle monitors on members of Ohio’s Haitian community.

Whew, it’s a lot. We’re here to keep you up-to-date.

🎨 “You can’t sit around and wait for somebody to say who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it.” — Faith Ringgold

Montgomery’s own Tiiwon Siaway put brush to canvas and turned our voices to color. She painted in real time the issues that concern our community: the school-to-prison pipeline, gun violence, education funding, and what real democracy looks like when it’s built by us, for us.

At Power on the Line, this colorful piece found a home with Micaela Oer. Micaela is a force that spent years building community and power with Alabama Forward. She now carries that fire as the new Executive Director of ACIJ. Forever a piece of the movement her leadership helped build.

2026 Power on the Line Weekend is in the books ✴️

From the workshops at the Summit to the last set at Big Spring Park, POTL was everything we hoped it would be AND THEN SOME.

Thank you to everyone who came out, danced, ate, connected, and showed each other what’s possible when we build together. Thank you to the organizers, the volunteers, vendors, and every artist who helped make this happen.
