Summer is in full swing, and with it, outdoor adventures! Before hitting the campground, here are some simple steps to reduce the number of tag-alongs you bring around (no, not the weird neighbors - invasive species).
🌎 Clean, drain, and dry all watercraft
Taking the boat out? Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are troublesome organisms that pose a threat to wildlife, water quality, and water infrastructure. The best thing you can do to prevent these critters from getting transported around the state is to clean, drain, and dry all watercraft while at the access point before leaving.
🌎 Clean shoes before and after adventures
Hikes may be a great way to get outdoors and exercise, but your shoes can quickly become a spreader of invasive plant seeds, insects, and other organisms. Cleaning shoes before and after camping trips, hiking excursions, and other deep outdoor activities keeps these buggers where they belong.
🌎 Burn as-local-as-possible firewood
S'mores anyone? Even after considering burn bans, take care of what you burn, and where. Invasive species commonly latch onto firewood, meaning local firewood is the best firewood. "But, wouldn't they burn in the fire?" I hear you say. Yes, but like any other conscious living thing, if the invasive species has legs, it won't stick around long enough to feel a flame.
