Brother Malcolm understood that the struggle for Black people will never be resolved as long as it’s compartmentalized as an American issue.

He believed that by uniting our people and bringing the injustices committed against Black Americans before the United Nations, the struggle could be elevated from a domestic civil rights issue to an international human rights issue.

That vision was the foundation of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), which Malcolm founded in 1964.

To better understand some of the most important ideas Malcolm carried during the final chapter of his life, revisit the OAAU’s founding principles and his speeches surrounding the organization.

Happy Rowena Moore Day!

Today, we celebrate the birthday of our founder, who was so much more than just the founder of the Malcolm X Foundation.

If you don’t know who Rowena Moore is, we highly recommend researching one of the most underrated Black historical figures in American history.

To shine a brief light on some of the history that Rowena made, she started her own version of the Boy Scouts called “The Commandoes” for the boys growing up in the projects alongside her son, helping keep them collectively engaged and out of trouble.

She carpooled every day from Southside Terrace to North Omaha, rounding up as many Black women as she could to join the strikes outside of Omaha’s packing houses, ultimately leading to the end of hiring discrimination at the plants.

She represented Omaha at numerous national UPWA conventions, an extraordinary accomplishment at a time when opportunities for both Black people and women within organized labor leadership were severely limited.

She became the first Black woman to run for Omaha City Council. She owned businesses, land, and multiple homes. After founding the Malcolm X Foundation with her own money, she hosted annual Malcolm X Day festivals that brought people like Betty Shabazz and Dick Gregory to the city.

This is only a short list. It doesn’t begin to capture the amount of work Rowena Moore dedicated to her community throughout a lifetime of service.

For 450+ years, we have collectively used a map that was catered to European explorers and did not accurately depict the true size of Africa.

Last week, the UN voted to replace the traditional world map with one that reflects how large Africa actually is compared to the other continents. The United States was the only nation (out of 167) to vote against the adoption.

Brother Malcolm made many trips to Africa and understood the significance of it as the “motherland.” His message about the importance of our people embracing Africa still holds weight til this day.

Africa is bigger, more fruitful, and more storied than what we’re often taught in school. To understand who we are as people, we must first understand where we come from.

Malcolm X Memorial Foundation received a $20 million grant from the Nebraska Legislature providing a budget for the design, site preparation, and initial construction. Now, they are focused on fundraising for the cultural center element.

As executive director JoAnna LeFlore and the Foundation anticipate a groundbreaking ceremony in the fall of 2026, she wants Omaha to have “first dibs” on the benefits of growth and access to resources that a project of this scale and magnitude will provide.

In order to prepare a new generation of local leaders, she is prioritizing its ambassador leadership program.

Without Marcus Garvey, there would be no Malcolm X, as we knew him to be.

Contrary to popular belief, Malcolm’s journey to free our people did not begin with the Nation of Islam. Earl and Louise Little were known Garveyites and traveled to Omaha to open a new UNIA chapter right before Brother Malcolm was born. Earl being a preacher for the UNIA and Louise being a writer for the organizations’s newspaper, The Negro World, laid the foundation for who Malcolm was to become.

To honor Malcolm is to honor Marcus Garvey and his introduction of the Pan-African movement. Happy earth day to one of the most important leaders in Black history.

Black August is not a traditional celebration.

It is a month to remember and honor those who gave their lives for the freedom of our people.

If you have never heard the names Edward Poindexter and Mondo We Langa, you should take the time this month to STUDY their case.

J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI’s COINTELPRO intentionally and strategically dismantled Black organization in North Omaha (the birthplace of Malcolm X) and the story rarely gets told.

On this day of Black August, we remember Brother Mondo and Ed for their continued work they did while prison to educate, mentor, and lead Black men while serving over 45 years to America’s “injustice” system.

Beyond the typical Malcolm X book and what many portray him to be, this book explores faith, self-reflection, and the importance of Malcolm’s journey to becoming El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz invites us to examine our own lives in detail and instructs us in taking our own hajj for purpose and growth.

This is a powerfully relevant read for the current climate we are living in.
