It's Wednesday, which means today is just another day full of lifesaving TNR efforts!
This guy enjoyed a nice breakfast before dashing back to his comfort zone. Apparently he couldn't leave without a few pointed looks back in our volunteer's direction - what do you think he's thinking??

Look at this cute baby! Seems so chill at the entrance of the trap.

So why do we have to have friendly cats in traps when we do TNR? We have a couple of reasons:

1. Just because a cat is super friendly outside does not mean that it will be friendly when it’s brought into a vet clinic. There’s all new sounds and smells, and it’s possible that the transport to the clinic is the first time kitty has ever been in a car. Even the nicest outdoor kitty can get stressed in those conditions.

2. It’s dangerous for veterinarians to try to sedate cats that are in carriers. A trap gives them many angles that they can access the cat. Whereas a carrier offers very few options for a veterinarian to safely access the cat.

3. A trap at least provides an opportunity for urine and 💩 to be concentrated in one area, or even better, flow through the trap. If a cat has to be held in a carrier before an appointment, they have very little room to get away from their own defecation and urine. This can cause urine scalding and expose any wounds to bacteria.

Finally, at least for us, this is a requirement for our primary vetting partner. And the reason it’s a requirement is for all of the above reasons. We value our veterinarian partners so much, and we want to ensure that we are not putting them in an unnecessarily risky situation when they do so much for us.

There's a common misconception about animal rescuers (whether they are fosters, trappers, or other care volunteers), and we're here to clear the air. Are you ready?

Here's the truth: volunteers aren't special.

I know what you're thinking. "Of course they're special!" And in some ways, they absolutely are. We love our people. They do excellent, indispensable work, and they deserve applause. We will shout them out whenever we get the chance!

However.

People outside of rescue constantly say things like, "Oh, that's amazing that you do _______. I could never do that."
Or, "It takes a special person for this kind of work!"
Or even, "Thank goodness there are people like you who can help."

The unspoken assumption is that volunteers are somehow tougher, smarter, better, and more heroic than the average person. More immune to "foster failing". Less sensitive to death and suffering. More energetic. More available. As if they're superhuman. And though most of our volunteers have plenty of hard-earned wisdom and skill, that's not the way things start... And it's certainly not a requirement for volunteer work.

Our TNR volunteers started out not knowing how to operate a trap. Now they use their personal vehicles and free time to help manage colonies in their own neighborhoods and beyond. We can always use more hands on deck for TNR - and they need not be expert hands.

Our nursery volunteers just show up and do whatever's needed, even if it's not glamorous. There's lots of p**p involved, but there are also adorable kittens. No bachelor's degree required.

Our fosters simply have an extra bathroom or a room in their basement that they're willing to temporarily share with a cat or two on their way to their forever home. They don't have to pay for supplies or handle medical care - they're just renting a bit of space to the cutest tenants ever.

Etc.

The only real difference between someone on our regular volunteer roster versus someone just reading this post... is the willingness to simply step up. No experience or heroism expected here - just a shared love of cats.

The question is, are you willing?

The weekend is finally here and we want to usher the days ahead with a note of appreciation for our wonderful and deeply dedicated volunteers.

We often talk about ourselves as “we”, but the truth is behind the “we” is a group of cat-loving superheroes who dedicate their time and energy toward helping Omaha‘s street-born cats and kittens.

From TNR, nursery care, fostering, application processing, administrative support, fundraising, donor engagement, and everything in between, Stray to Spay is only successful because of the people who keep us going day in and day out.

So a HUGE thank you to all of our volunteers who show up and get so much done. We are so lucky to have you!

Hi! It’s your friendly cat trappers here! We have a big favor to ask! We try not to request help too often but this year we have so many vulnerable kittens and we desperately need critical care supplies including kitten food and an incubator.

We have been wanting one for years and we have found a donor willing to match donations! Please help us care for the kittens who need life-saving measures to survive and thrive.

Pablo Picasso is a good example. He got a bad case of calicivirus and ended up needing to spend time in an incubator at . We are happy to report to he is feeling much better.

Sometimes life gets ya down, and a little TLC is needed before going back to life as usual!

This handsome outdoor cat had a severe injury, and one of our volunteers helped trap him for needed vet care. Now he's recovering in a safe spot with plenty of snacks, and he's well on his way to feeling better.

Here is another tom cat! This elusive fella has been living his life as a bully, but we’re hoping a few less trouble puffs will chill him out (it’s a pretty good way to deal with bullies).

It’s cool to be kind!
