Tibetan Monks at the Nebraska Zen Center

The monks who visited us from Gaden Shartse Monastery last weekend are back in town! They will be offering three events at the Nebraska Zen Center:

Thursday, October 10, at 6:30 pm — 21 Taras Puja Ceremony
Praises different aspects of the wisdom energy of Tara, a female Buddha.

Friday, October 11, at 6:30 pm — Tea Ceremony
A warm, chanted ceremony that reminds us to be grateful for our blessings, which are overflowing. Come with a wish or request for any kind of blessing.

Saturday, October 12, at 7:00 pm – Chenrezig Meditation
Chenrezig is what Tibetan Buddhists call Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Chenrezig meditation is a visualization practice that helps us develop compassion for all sentient beings.

The monks perform these ceremonies to generate good will and to raise funds for their monastery in India. Please give what you can.

Six Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery in southern India will be staying at NZC from September 27 to October 2 during a brief stop on their national tour. Gaden Shartse routinely sends a group abroad to raise funds by performing Tibetan Buddhist arts and rituals.

The monks will talk to the NZC sangha about monastic life on Sunday, September 29, from 9:30 to 11:30 am (in place of Just Sitting). They will offer us a rare glimpse of daily life in the monastery—sharing stories, chanting, and providing a demonstration of monastic debate. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Donations are welcomed for this talk.

**Please arrive by 9:15 and be seated by 9:25.

We were honored and overjoyed to share the weekend with Rev. Gyokei Yokohama and Rev. Dolan Kojima from Soto Zen Buddhism North America.

They shared stories of their journeys with the sangha and engaged in lively dialogue about Zen in the US and abroad in modern times.

We are so grateful for their visit!

This past Saturday, members of Nebraska Zen Center gathered in the temple garden for a lively afternoon of music, friendship, and community. It was a reminder that something incredibly special happens when we sit zazen together and support each other’s practice.

Sangha is the embodiment of our shared oneness. Our inherent interconnection isn’t always obvious in our daily lives, but sitting in silence on our cushions and sharing a cup of tea and conversation afterward actualizes and enlivens it.

Harmonizing with Our Families

We often see our families as impediments to our practice. Perhaps our partners or children don’t appreciate or understand the time we take for ourselves to meditate. At Open Zen tomorrow morning, NZC’s interim head priest Daishin McCabe will share a dharma talk exploring what it means to belong, which is the heart of family life.

Open Zen, 10 am–12 pm:
Zazen, service, and dharma talk
Followed by conversation over tea or coffee and work practice

Sangha is at the heart of all we do at Nebraska Zen Center. Through community, we collectively support one another’s practice. Each time we sit zazen together, share in work practice or extended retreat, or say hello before Sunday Open Zen, we are embodying the interplay of giver, receiver, and gift. In these moments, we can experience the joy that comes when we realize we are not separate, and we do not exist in isolation.

During the month of August NZC is celebrating its sangha. We invite you to join our community by becoming an NZC member. Walk the Zen path with us and support an organization that makes sitting together possible.

None of us are the same. No two snowflakes are alike. We each have a unique contribution to make, yet we are often dismissive of our own talents or downplay our significance, especially when we see someone else do the same job better than we do. We must believe in ourselves: we have something to offer that no one but us can give. Meaningful work starts from this premise.

Tomorrow at Open Zen, Rev. Daishin McCabe will talk about how our Zen practice can help us fully inhabit our role in the world.

Join us at 10 am, in person or via Zoom.

Rev. Daishin McCabe will share a dharma talk via Zoom at Open Zen tomorrow:

Finding Harmony: The Transformative Power of Chanting in Buddhism

Our first chant began the moment we exited the birth canal—a raw, authentic cry of the world. Since then we’ve been refining it, striving to harmonize with the sounds of all beings. The formal practice of chanting consciously polishes our cry, transforming our voices into a healing balm.

Open Zen, 10 am–12 pm:
Zazen, World Peace Ceremony, and dharma talk
Followed by conversation over tea or coffee and work practice.

Gratitude.

With deep bows, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to Nebraska Zen Center’s Spring 2024 Three Wheels Auction and Fundraiser. NZC relies on the support of our community. Your donations have a significant impact and go directly to supporting our mission of sharing the Zen path with all who seek it.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to sangha member George Sozen Patenode for building a beautiful memorial to Rev. Einin Kyoki Roberts in our garden. His dedication and hard work have created a lasting tribute.
