Notre Dame Housing began as the result of planning by the Notre Dame Sisters when they came to realize that fewer persons were entering religious life and the North American Motherhouse they called home would become an immense financial liability unless something was done. The Motherhouse was contiguous with Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls school from 1929 until it closed in 1974 when this all-gi

rls school joined with an all-boys school to form the new and still-operating Roncalli Catholic High School, leaving the Academy empty. For a period of time, the Sisters used the school's facilities to support retreats and group conference needs. Then, after careful consideration and significant planning, the Sisters tore down the 1964 wing of the academy and built new HUD Section 202 housing in 1996 and 1997.

Over the course of 11 years (and two projects rolled into one), the Sisters completed the transformation of the Motherhouse into 62 units of affordable housing with a Section 42 tax credit and Historic tax credit project for its renewal. Notre Dame Housing is much more than affordable housing for older adults; rather, it builds community within the boundaries of the campus and interacts in the neighborhood to build community through the provision of services on site for residents, by residents going into and contributing to the larger community, and by taking care of one to the other among residents and neighbors.

About 15% of Omaha households include someone age 65 or older. The average cost of a senior apartment in the Omaha area is about $1,132 per month, while independent living communities average more than $3,000 per month, making affordable senior housing an important option for many older adults.

Omaha continues to see a growing need for affordable housing. Regional housing studies have found that the Omaha-Council Bluffs area does not currently have enough quality affordable housing to meet community demand.

Affordable senior housing is about so much more than providing a place to live. It creates opportunities for older adults to remain independent, build friendships, stay connected to their community, access important services, and age with dignity. At Notre Dame Housing, residents find not only affordable housing, but also a welcoming community where people can thrive.

Lunch time at Notre Dame Housing is made even more special thanks to our lovely volunteers from the Mormon Trail Center who help serve meals a couple times each week. We are so grateful for their kindness, generosity, and the warm smiles they bring to our community. Their support helps make mealtimes not just nourishing, but a meaningful time of connection for our residents.

Behind the Scenes: Meet Cindy Moran!

We’re excited to introduce the newest member of our Notre Dame Housing team, Cindy Moran, our new Assistant Property Manager!

Cindy brings a wealth of experience in property management and a passion for connecting with residents and staff. With her positive energy and dedication, she is looking forward to getting to know our community and supporting our mission every day.

A little more about Cindy:
✈️She grew up as a proud “military brat,” with her father serving 28 years in the U.S. Air Force.
🌏 Cindy was born at Clark Air Force Base in Manila, Philippines, and has lived all over—including the Philippines, Hawaii, Missouri, Colorado, and Nebraska.
🌽 With both parents originally from Wayne, Nebraska, Cindy considers herself a “born-again Nebraskan” and now happily calls Bellevue home.
📣 Outside of work, she stays busy cheering on her daughter, Allyssa, at All-Star competitive cheer events.

Our residents at Notre Dame Housing had such a wonderful time welcoming Bill Chvala for the premiere of his newest character portrayal, George Washington! The presentation was engaging, entertaining, and a fun way for residents to experience history brought to life in a memorable way.

A huge thank you to Bill Chvala for sharing his talent with our community and for making the debut of George Washington so special. We appreciate the time, creativity, and care he brings to each performance, and our residents truly enjoyed this special visit!

Partnerships: Vodec Vocals

Notre Dame Housing is grateful for our partnership with Vodec and the joy their team brings to our community each month. A group of Vodec participants known as the Vodec Vocals visits regularly to provide live entertainment for our residents. Each month features a different genre of music, creating something new to look forward to and sparking great conversation and memories. This monthly connection has become a favorite tradition for both the Vodec participants and our residents, strengthening relationships and building a sense of belonging.

Our residents and staff at Notre Dame Housing enjoyed a very special Father’s Day outing to Peter Fink Private Car Museum! It was a wonderful opportunity to get out, spend time together, and admire an incredible collection of classic cars and automotive history.

Behind the Scenes: Partnering with VNA to Bring a COVID Booster Clinic On Site
When it comes to resident wellness, convenience and access can make all the difference. That’s why Service Coordinator Theresia Dixon partnered with the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) to bring a COVID booster clinic directly to Notre Dame Housing giving residents an easy, familiar place to get vaccinated without needing to arrange transportation or navigate a new location.

Behind the scenes, Theresia helped coordinate the details with VNA from selecting a date and preparing an on site space for check in and vaccinations, to sharing clinic information with residents ahead of time. She helped answer questions, encouraged residents to bring any documentation needed, and made sure the process would feel welcoming and straightforward on clinic day.

This partnership is a great example of how Theresia connects residents to practical health support right where they live. Thank you to VNA for collaborating with us and residents who participated in keeping our community healthy. Watch for future on site clinics and resource events coordinated through Resident Services.

Behind the Scenes: Meet the Team Driving Notre Dame Housing’s Mission
Behind the scenes, Ariel Rathjen, Notre Dame Housing’s Life Enrichment Coordinator, is always looking for practical ways to support residents’ wellbeing, and one of those ways is helping strengthen our food pantry. Ariel works closely with the Heartland Foodbank through its Retail Rescue program, which connects nonprofits with local grocery stores to pick up safe, surplus food that would otherwise go to waste. Because of this partnership, Notre Dame Housing can add more variety and consistency to pantry offerings for residents and the community. Notre Dame Housing is currently partnered with Aldi on 30th Street, and Ariel is working with the Heartland Foodbank to begin an additional partnership with Baker’s on 30th Street, helping ensure even more food can make its way to the people who need it most.
