Notre Dame Housing began as the result of planning by the Notre Dame Sisters when they came to realize that fewer persons were entering religious life and the North American Motherhouse they called home would become an immense financial liability unless something was done. The Motherhouse was contiguous with Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls school from 1929 until it closed in 1974 when this all-girls school joined with an all-boys school to form the new and still-operating Roncalli Catholic High School, leaving the Academy empty. For a period of time, the Sisters used the school's facilities to support retreats and group conference needs. Then, after careful consideration and significant planning, the Sisters tore down the 1964 wing of the academy and built new HUD Section 202 housing in 1996 and 1997.

Over the course of 11 years (and two projects rolled into one), the Sisters completed the transformation of the Motherhouse into 62 units of affordable housing with a Section 42 tax credit and Historic tax credit project for its renewal. Notre Dame Housing is much more than affordable housing for older adults; rather, it builds community within the boundaries of the campus and interacts in the neighborhood to build community through the provision of services on site for residents, by residents going into and contributing to the larger community, and by taking care of one to the other among residents and neighbors.

🦁🐘 Residents enjoyed a wonderful day exploring the zoo together!

From watching playful animals and visiting favorite exhibits to enjoying time outdoors with friends, the trip was filled with fun, laughter, and plenty of memorable moments. Outings like these provide opportunities to stay active, learn something new, and enjoy the beauty of nature while making lasting connections with fellow residents.

MYTH: Affordable housing is just about providing someone with a cheaper apartment.

FACT: Affordable housing is about stability, independence and dignity. At Notre Dame Housing, residents age 55+ have an affordable place to call home and access to food assistance, wellness and educational programs, social activities, and a supportive community.

A big thank you to HELP Medical Equipment for providing a Wheelchair/Walker Maintenance & Wash service for our residents at Notre Dame Housing!

Residents had the opportunity to have their wheelchairs and walkers inspected, cleaned, and maintained to help keep their equipment safe, comfortable, and in good working condition. This valuable service not only improved mobility equipment but also provided peace of mind for residents who rely on it every day.

We appreciate HELP Medical Equipment's dedication to supporting the independence, safety, and well-being of older adults in our community.

Reverse Trick-or-Treating Fun! 🎃🍬

Our residents received a special Halloween surprise Wednesday afternoon when Jennifer Wismont and Junior Girl Scout Troop 45107 visited Notre Dame Housing for some reverse trick-or-treating! The Girl Scouts dressed in costume and went door-to-door delivering sweet treats and a little Halloween cheer to our residents.

Thank you to Troop 45107 for spending the afternoon with us and bringing so many smiles to our community. We loved having you! 💜👻🍭

World Food Day: Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.

Food insecurity isn’t a problem somewhere else. It exists right here in our community.

Across the Food Bank for the Heartland’s 93-county service area in Nebraska and western Iowa, 1 in 7 people, and nearly 1 in 5 children, experience food insecurity. More than 259,000 people, including nearly 88,000 children, are facing hunger.

Through Notre Dame Housing’s Life Enrichment Food Pantry, we work with community partners, donors and volunteers to make nutritious food more accessible to residents and our community.

During the 2025–2026 fiscal year alone, the pantry distributed more than 112,400 pounds of food.

This year’s World Food Day theme reminds us that innovation isn’t always about new technology. Sometimes it means finding better ways to work together, reduce barriers, and connect available resources with the people who need them.

Every bag of groceries, every partnership, every volunteer hour and every new idea moves us toward a future where fewer of our neighbors have to wonder where their next meal will come from.

With approximately 44% of Nebraska households facing a housing-cost burden, affordable housing is an essential part of helping people remain financially secure and independent. At Notre Dame Housing, affordable housing for adults 55 and older is paired with services, programming, food assistance and opportunities for connection, helping residents not simply have a place to live, but a community in which they can thrive.
