Join us this Tuesday, May 26 at Urban Abbey for a thoughtful conversation about Rough Sleepers — the powerful book by Tracy Kidder that explores street medicine, homelessness, and the deep relationships that make healing possible.

Whether you’ve already read the book cover to cover or are simply curious about the realities of caring for our unhoused neighbors, we’d love to have you in the conversation. Rough Sleepers challenges us to think differently about healthcare, compassion and community. We can’t wait to discuss it together.

We are heartbroken by the recent assault of a man experiencing homelessness — an act of violence reportedly carried out by a group of young men and recorded for social media entertainment.

At HEAL Omaha, one of the most painful parts of this work is realizing that we still have to advocate for the basic humanity of the people we serve. The individuals we meet on the streets are not content. They are not disposable. They are human beings with histories, relationships, trauma, hopes, and inherent dignity.

We are grateful that arrests have been made, and we understand why many people are calling for severe punishment. Accountability matters. Safety matters. The man who was harmed deserves compassion, protection, and support.

At the same time, our work has taught us that violence itself is often a symptom of something deeply broken. Humiliating and assaulting another human being for entertainment reflects a profound absence of empathy and connection — something that should concern all of us as a community. We also know that incarceration alone often compounds trauma rather than healing it, and trauma is one of the driving forces behind so much suffering, addiction, violence, and homelessness that we encounter every day.

We believe true justice must involve healing. Healing for the man who was attacked. Healing for a culture that too often dehumanizes vulnerable people. And healing for the young people whose actions reveal serious moral and psychological wounds of their own.

This moment should challenge all of us to ask difficult questions about the kind of community we are creating — online and offline. Compassion is not weakness. Human dignity is not conditional. And every person, housed or unhoused, deserves to move through this world without fear of being treated as less than human.

Please remember: the people living outside are our neighbors. They deserve safety, dignity, and humanity — always.

🐾 HOWLING FOR HEAL 🐾

Join us for an afternoon of furry friends, community, and fundraising in support of HEAL Omaha! 💙

📅 Saturday, June 27
⏰ 11AM–3PM

Funds raised at this event will go directly into HEAL Omaha’s Pet Assistance Fund — helping keep people and their pets together during some of life’s hardest moments. 🐾

Through this fund, HEAL Omaha Street Medicine provides rabies vaccines, spay and neuter support, and city licensing for the pets of people experiencing homelessness. These simple but critical services help remove barriers so pets can accompany their people into emergency shelters and housing opportunities.

For many of our patients, their pets are family, protection, companionship, and unconditional love. By supporting this fundraiser, you are helping both humans and animals stay safe, healthy, and together.

Join us in caring for our community — one person, one pet, one act of compassion at a time. ❤️

🩺 Big News from HEAL Omaha!

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Dalton Nelsen and Nurse Melissa Neuenfeldt will be heading to Orlando to present at the National Healthcare for the Homeless Conference! ✈️☀️

In an era of rising needs and funding uncertainty, HEAL Omaha is sharing a story of resilience over revenue. Our presentation will showcase how we built a freestanding street medicine team that delivers high-volume, high-impact care on a minimal budget.

The heart of our message? Building trusting relationships doesn't require a mountain of money—it requires courage and community.

📍 What we’ll be sharing:

The Volunteer Powerhouse: How we mobilized 100+ passionate clinicians and advocates.

Grassroots Resourcefulness: Transforming community goodwill into clinical capacity.

Lived Experience: How our outreach is guided by those who have walked the path themselves.

The Roadmap: Practical, replicable strategies for organizations to thrive in resource-constrained environments.

We believe that by focusing on human capital and creative partnerships, we can continue to provide compassionate care, no matter the financial climate.

Let’s rise together! 🤝

💙✨ Please join us in a massive round of applause for HEAL Omaha’s newest Employee of the Month: Hamdi Mohamud!

You might be asking, "Wait, didn't Hamdi just become your second paid employee?" To which we say: Exactly.

The selection process was grueling. The competition was... well, there was one other person. But after a rigorous 15-second review of the candidates, Hamdi’s talent, dedication, and the fact that she’s basically been running the show anyway made her the clear winner.

It’s a tough title to earn, and an even tougher one to defend (mostly because the coffee budget is on the line), but we know she’s up for the challenge.

Congrats, Hamdi! We literally couldn't do this without you. 🩺🩵
