Venturi vs Positive Displacement Pump vs Fertilizer Tank: Which fertigation system is actually right for your pivot?
Every farm, every crop and every irrigation system is different. That’s why we’ve put together an objective comparison of the three most common fertigation methods used on centre pivots.

We compare:
● How each system works
● Where each system performs best
● The strengths and limitations of each
● Which growers and applications each system is best suited for

The biggest mistake is comparing price instead of performance.

A Venturi injector, a positive displacement pump and a fertilizer tank all have their place—but they deliver very different levels of accuracy, consistency, control and labour requirements.

There is no universal winner. There is only the system that best matches your crop, your management style and your production goals.

Compare apples with apples. Then make an informed decision.

🔧 DIAPHRAGMS CONTINUOUSLY TEARING? Ask the right questions before replacing another one.

We recently investigated an I-Feeder PD pump where the diaphragm was repeatedly tearing, while two identical pumps installed alongside it continued operating without any issues.

That immediately suggested the problem was not the pump, but something unique to that installation.

An important clue: the damaged diaphragm, shown in the photo, was on the suction side of the fertigation pump.

In our experience, 9 out of 10 times this points to a suction-side problem.

Common causes include:

* Blocked suction filters
* Fertiliser or chemical with a viscosity higher than the pump was designed for
* Improper mixing, allowing solids to remain in suspension
* Air entering the suction line
* Blowers being used instead of hydraulic mixers, introducing air into the product
* Suction lines that are too long or too small in diameter, creating excessive vacuum

In this particular case, the root cause turned out to be something different.

A spring-loaded non-return valve had been installed on the suction side. The valve was incorrectly specified for the application, and the internal O-rings had begun to disintegrate. Fragments of the O-rings partially blocked the valve, restricting product flow and creating excessive suction conditions. The result was repeated diaphragm failure.

The lesson?

Replacing diaphragms without finding the underlying cause usually leads to the next diaphragm failing as well.

Successful maintenance isn’t about changing parts—it’s about understanding why they failed.

Before replacing another diaphragm, ask:
✔️ Is the suction line unrestricted?
✔️ Is the product being mixed correctly?
✔️ Is air entering the system?
✔️ Are all valves suitable for the application?
✔️ Has anything changed since the problem started?

Finding the root cause saves downtime, reduces maintenance costs, and keeps your fertigation system operating reliably.
