September is Hydrocephalus Awareness Month and Sepsis Awareness Month — two observances that are especially important to the community that we serve.
Hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain, affects many people with Spina Bifida, and about 60–80% need a shunt to help manage it. People with Spina Bifida may also face a higher risk of urinary tract, shunt-related, and skin infections. If one becomes severe, it can lead to sepsis, the body’s extreme, life-threatening response that can damage tissues and organs.
Throughout September, we’ll be sharing more about hydrocephalus and sepsis, how they can affect people with Spina Bifida, and why early recognition of the signs of a potential problem is critical.
Awareness gives people the knowledge to recognize changes, ask questions, and advocate for their health.
