Two organizations in Washington have hosted screenings of the timely and important documentary Gone Guys. Aiming to build on this momentum, Washington Initiative for Boys and Men is reaching out to civic leaders and community based organizations to help get more screenings planned.
Kellen CARES Foundation in Spokane and Journeymen on Vashon Island showed Gone Guys followed by a panel discussion at events in March and April. They each vouch for the quality of the 45-minute documentary, the depth of the discussion it elicits, and the ease of working with the filmmakers to put on a screening event. (Leaders of both organizations have joined us to advocate for the creation of a Washington Boys and Men Commission, including by testifying at a public hearing earlier this year.)
“The turnout to the Gone Guys screening on Vashon Island exceeded expectations with almost 100 in attendance. Some people even came over on the ferry from Seattle and Tacoma. Not only is the film powerful, meaningful, and worthwhile, but organizing the event was easy thanks to the step-by-step guide and discussion materials provided by the film team.” - Duncan Endava, Journeymen Institute
Contact us or the folks at Kellen CARES Foundation or Journeymen Institute if you might be up for collaborating on hosting a screening, or if you know someone we should talk to about this.
= What is Gone Guys about? =
Over the past fifty years, boys and young men have steadily disengaged from school, work, and broader society. They’re falling behind academically, struggling with loneliness and isolation, and facing rising rates of substance abuse and su***de.
This 45-minute documentary draws on the influential work of Richard V. Reeves’ (Of Boys and Men), illuminating these challenges through powerful data and compelling personal stories. Many of us have experienced these issues first-hand, but it can be difficult to talk about them. It’s not an either-or choice: caring more about boys and men does not mean caring less about women and girls.
Set in rural Vermont, the film brings national data to life with engaging animation accompanying lived experience featuring young men, educators, mentors, and trailblazing programs that are working to re-engage boys and young men in their communities and reshape their futures.
