Congratulations Reeves Middle School teacher Lucas Claussen for being honored with this year's Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching History!

Lucas is one of the Pride Storytelling Project cohort members and is working on developing "a mini unit of study for secondary classrooms, adaptable for PK–12+ educators, using the oral histories collected through the Pride Storytelling Project. The unit will provide plug-and-play lesson plans aligned with history, social studies, and ELA standards, allowing teachers to bring local LGBTQ+ history into their classrooms.

Lessons will center on excerpts from the twenty oral history interviews, supported by guiding questions, contextual background, and activities that encourage critical thinking and connection to themes of belonging, resistance, and creativity in Olympia."

We're lucky to have such thoughtful and committed educators in our community. What a well deserved acknowledgment, Lucas!

Join author and educator Johann N. Neem in celebrating the people who are making significant contributions to the field of history in Washington.

Pride Storytelling Project cohort members and project narrators got together last weekend for a photo shoot. No pictures of the actual photo shoot only food and crochet πŸ˜ƒ Such a sweet and relaxing afternoon!

did an amazing job taking portraits of project narrators! We can't wait to share them with you. We'll use the images in a traveling installation that amplifies and engages with the oral history collection. Save the date for the opening: June 7 at the Capitol Theater 🌟

Also big thanks to Olympia Food Co-op for donating a gift certificate so we could feed everyone. The coop has been so supportive of our work in general and this project in particular. Thanks for showing your love πŸ’–

Did you know that our Stories of Food, Food as Story exhibit is making another round at the Lacey Museum and Cultural Center through the end of April? Join Elaine Vradenburgh and Genevieve Canceko Chan for an oral history and storytelling workshop on April 23 from 5:30-7:00pm at the museum:

How do we communicate, remember, and connect through food? Join us for an evening of reflecting, sharing and writing about our food traditions. Participants learn tips for documenting and writing about your family’s food history and stories. Bring an object that connects in some way to your food story. It could be a cooking utensil, recipe card, an ingredient, or something else entirely. This workshop is offered in conjunction with our rotating guest exhibit, Stories of Food, Food as Story, curated by Window Seat Media, that is on display at the Lacey Museum and Cultural Center through the end of April.

Registration is limited! Hope to see you there 🌟

Our Board gathered for dinner and a listening session earlier this week. (It took us two pictures to get us all in the frame πŸ˜ƒ ) We each listened to 3 stories or interviews across 10 different projects, and we reflected on the themes and teachings of the stories as well as the connections between the stories. We're beginning the process of shifting through 10 years of recordings to prepare them for archiving at The Evergreen State College and exploring ways to re-curate the materials so they are more accessible to the community 🌟
