ARE PODENCOS AND GALGOS DOGS FOR EVERYONE?
In the US we have been criticized because we do not want to seek quantity of adoptions but quality. So we had to turn down a large number of adoption offers because the adopters are unwilling or unable to meet the needs of a Galgo or Podenco. And I said in a group that they are not for everyone and that was when the discussion began.
I refuse to do bulk adoptions, quality comes first and that includes daily runs, long daily walks, healthy diet and simply a doggy life.
I do not rescue dogs in Spain, I turn them into healthy, confident and happy dogs to end up fat, with little exercise and without stimulation on a sofa. That is not our goal and I am sure that all my Spanish colleagues agree with me. These dogs should be treated like dogs, they are not substitutes for a child or a partner. Galgos and podencos don't need only kisses and fancy coats. Sighthounds are fun, playful and energetic dogs that enjoy long walks and play time with other dogs in dog parks, on beaches, etc. That is what makes them happy and keeps them healthy. In Europe, people can walk their dogs in the field without a leash, it is legal and most people train their galgos for good recall. They are well trained so that they can enjoy long walks with their canine companions. They love to run and chase, that's what makes Galgos and Podencos "smile" and that's what we want for our dogs. So when we look for a home for them, we want them to have a happy and healthy life. It always saddens me to read how people request tranquilizers for their active dogs instead of giving them more exercise and canine fun.
In Spain, we all agree that Galgos and Podencos are not for everyone and they need special homes, that is not discouraging adopters, it is acting on behalf of and in favor of our rescues and what is best for them!
