South South Bird Alliance's annual picnic is June 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Rose Garden Shelter at Squaxin Park. It's a chance to meet other members, celebrate our volunteers, and share some birding highlights.

We'll have a meal at 4 p.m. We will provide sandwiches and drinks. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share.

The event also includes an awards presentation, Bird Bingo, a bird walk, and a sharing table for surplus books, birding equipment, and gardening items.

Contact Deb Nickerson at [email protected] if you have questions or wish to help with this event.

The arrival of June marks Le***an, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. Celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, and, in the case of Audubon, bird outings. The outdoors have not always been a welcoming place for LGBTQ people and Audubon wants to help change that.

Let's Go Birding Together events are for everyone who loves birds and the outdoors. We welcome those who identify as LGBTQ, allies, families, and anyone who wants to enjoy an outdoor experience that is inclusive. Learn more at the link in comments.

Did you know?
Outdoor cats face the threats of cars, predators, disease, and parasites. Of special note is the threat posed by coyotes. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends keeping cats indoors or in enclosures to prevent pets from becoming coyote food. The lifespan of outdoor cats or cats with lots of outdoor access may be only half that of indoor cats.

Birds and cats don't mix. Join us in keeping your cat indoors and controlled outdoors. For photos and ideas about protecting your cat and wildlife, visit https://southsoundbirds.org/cats-indoors-program/ 🐦

This past weekend quite a few SSBA members headed to Eastern Washington for the 61st annual Wenas Campout! There were about 170 people at the campout this year. We enjoyed a beautiful landscape, amazing birds and meeting friends old and new! Look for more information about our experiences in an upcoming newsletter!

Join our overnight adventure to Mount Rainier and look for owls and white-tailed ptarmigans. We'll meet at the Cougar Rock group campground in Mount Rainier National Park on June 15 for some evening owling. We'll stay overnight at Cougar Rock group camp and get an early start (5 a.m.) at Paradise on June 16 for a hike to Pebble Creek.

Pebble Creek is halfway between Paradise and Camp Muir. The trail is 4.4 miles roundtrip with 1,760 feet of elevation gain. The highpoint is 7,180 feet. The trail is well-traveled but is steep and at high elevation. There will be snowfields to cross; microspikes and poles are highly recommended.

Bring camping gear, food, water, hiking poles, microspikes, binoculars, and layered clothing. Be prepared for fog, cold weather, wind, and sun. The weather on the mountain is unpredictable. It can be very pleasant and it can be very windy and cold.

Please email Lin Stern at [email protected] to register for this trip. For more information, visit https://southsoundbirds.org/event/mt-rainier-owling-and-ptarmigan-adventure/ 🏔️🐦🦉
