Sometimes, BELLINGHAM is cited as a district going through exactly what we are. Multiple schools in the Olympia School District are projected to start next year in overload with upwards of 32 students in 4th and 5th grade classrooms. The boundary study didn't balance schools or access, and the first reading of next year's budget is June 18. We've heard a lot of stories like this from parents wanting to transfer into our choice programs and neighborhood schools. Make it make sense.

Innovative leaders solve problems creatively. Sensible solutions are knocking on our door, and our community is asking district leadership to have the courage to try them. Our children deserve nothing less!

On Thursday, May 28, the Olympia School District held a meeting where they installed the new Olympia High School student representative and discussed the boundary study, the first of its kind in nearly 3 decades. Read the recap at https://osd4all.org/the-tension-of-student-choice/

This article is exceedingly misleading and reckless. The utilization numbers presented in this article INCLUDE portables for all campuses that have them. For example, Centennial Elementary's permanent space capacity is 570, with a utilization rate of 71%. This article reports the utilization rate for the additional 125 seats that come exclusively from portables, which drives the utilization % down to 58%. Similarly, Boston Harbor Elementary only has 200 permanent seats, which means the actual school building utilization rate is 85% (not 56%) - north of the 80% threshold BERK used to define "efficient". This pattern holds true for every single school discussed in this piece. Our school buildings are not as under utilized as this article would make you think, because they all include non-permanent portables in the utilization calculations. McKenny, Garfield, Hansen, LP Brown, Madison, McLane, Jefferson, Marshall, Reeves, Washington, and Capital ALL have higher utilization %s than what is reported in this article. I encourage the author to issue a correction, or at least an honest comparison between the capacities of the actual school buildings, and not include portables, which can be moved and/or sold. Not doing so, in my opinion, is doing this community a disservice, and can very easily lead to opinions and major decisions made based on bad and/or incomplete information. Additionally, I encourage all Olympians to read the report for themselves, because this article is not giving you the whole story, and borderlines on misinformation. You can find the report here, and the differences in utilization %s in Exhibit 3:https://osd4all.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/OSD-Boundary-Study-Report-FINAL-2026_0522-Frank-Wilson.pdf

Just a reminder that the last time the Olympia School District went for school closure, it was these two schools. Within a year and without AVID curriculum, the Washington School Recognition Program awarded them for their performance, an honor earned by just 16% of schools across the state.

You might be surprised, but Bellingham Public Schools used the same demographer as the Olympia School District in 2023.

On May 7, the Olympia School District Board of Directors held a work session to discuss Outcome Monitoring reports ahead of the next implementation of a District Improvement Plan (DIP), & on May 14, they held a meeting to rename the Capital High School Orchestra Pit and Scene Shop, as well as look at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) contract for the upcoming school year.

The real excitement was in the Lauren Dolan Advocate of the Year Awards (the Doleys)! Thank you all OSD volunteers. Read the recap at https://osd4all.org/congratulations-doley-winners/
