Important Information for Recent WPEA Retirees

Dear WPEA Retiree,

If you recently retired from Washington state service, we want to make sure you have the information you need regarding retroactive payments owed under the 2026 WPEA contracts.
Since you are no longer working for your agency, it is important to make sure your current contact information is on file. Taking a few minutes now to update your information can help ensure that your former agency or college, the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS), and WPEA can reach you if there are questions about your pay or retirement recalculation.

Please take these three steps:
1. Update your information with your former payroll office
Contact your payroll office and confirm that they have your current:
• Home mailing address
• Personal email address
• Phone number

2. Update your information with the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS)

Log in to your DRS online account and make sure your current contact information is correct.

DRS uses this information to communicate with you about your retirement account and benefits. Retirees can update their address information through their online account.
www.drs.wa.gov/account

3. Update your information with WPEA
We also want to make sure WPEA can reach you with important information about your contract, retroactive payments, and other union updates for retirees.

Please update your current:
• Mailing address
• Personal email address
• Phone number
www.wpea.org/update

Why is this important?

Recent retirees may be entitled to retroactive compensation from the 2026 contract agreements, and your retirement benefit may need to be recalculated based on compensation you earned before retirement.

Please take a few minutes to update your information with all three organizations.

You worked hard for the wages and benefits you earned during your career. WPEA wants to make sure you have every opportunity to receive what you are owed.

If you have questions or need assistance, please contact WPEA at [email protected].

The Edmonds BBQ was a great success, bringing members together for an afternoon of great food, conversation, and plenty of laughs. Members had the opportunity to ask questions, connect with one another, and enjoy meaningful discussions throughout the event. We were also pleased to welcome Representative Cindy Ryu, who stopped by to enjoy a burger and visit with Edmonds Union members.

A huge shout-out goes to the Edmonds Shop Stewards for making this event happen. They handled the planning, purchased the food, and kept members informed with regular event updates. Their hard work, dedication, and teamwork made the BBQ a tremendous success. Great work, team!

Don't Forget! Join us tomorrow at the Noon UNITY Meeting. Retirement can feel distant until it suddenly isn't. Whether you're planning to retire in the next few years or simply want to understand your options, WPEA members are invited to a special UNITY Wednesday workshop hosted by the Retired Public Employees Council (RPEC).

During the July 8 UNITY meeting at noon, RPEC will present The Retirement Process for State Workers, covering key retirement steps, important timelines, pension and benefit considerations, and resources available to help state employees prepare for the future.

The session is designed to help members make informed decisions and better understand the retirement process before critical deadlines arrive.

This workshop is open to all WPEA members. Even if retirement is still years away, understanding the process now can help you avoid surprises later and make more confident long-term plans.

Today, we celebrate community and the power of people standing together. Wishing everyone a safe, happy, and memorable Fourth of July!
