Look at this hedgerow's progress! It has grown so much since it was installed at Piece By Piece Farm in the fall of 2024. We invite you to come learn and see this hedgerow in person during the two events we are hosting next week.

We will have a maintenance party on Monday evening (5/8) from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Not only will you help us spruce up this demonstration hedgerow, but you’ll also get the inside scoop on this hedgerow project from the designers. Plus, you’ll get to ask us as many questions as you’d like while practicing your plant ID skills!

We are also offering a Success Tour on Thursday evening (5/11) from 6 to 8:00 p.m. where the farmers, our Thurston Conservation District colleagues, and the hedgerow designers will discuss the installation methods used and the successes and challenges so far.

You can sign up for these events here: https://www.nativeplantsalvage.org/events

This hedgerow was installed through a partnership of Piece by Piece Farm’s owners; Thurston Conservation District; WSU Extension; Thurston County Water Resources; USDA NRCS; Washington Conservation Commission; and Native Plant Salvage Foundation.

Stop by tomorrow evening for our first Hedgerows Success Tour of 2026 at Helsing Junction Farms in Rochester! This workshop is great for people considering installing their own hedgerow, who may be curious to learn more, or who simply want to visit a beautiful hedgerow on a local farm!

You can expect to tour a developing hedgerow and get the inside scoop on how and why it was installed. The farmers, our Thurston Conservation District colleagues, and members of our own team will discuss everything from design goals, budgets/costs, the supporting grants, survival rates, the irrigation system, lessons learned, and so much more.

We are only offering two Success Tours in 2026, so register before it’s too late! The dates are June 2 and June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m.

We had a lovely evening last week exploring McLane Creek Nature Trail during our Plant ID class. Our instructors introduced people to a diverse range of plants that call this beautiful trail home. Thank you to everyone who came to learn or who volunteered as an instructor!

Our next Plant ID Walk (and the final one of 2026) will be on June 17. If you haven't already registered, do so quickly before the class fills up!

Our Plant ID classes are informal, ~1.5-2-hour walks where you'll learn about dozens of native plants in a lowland forest ecosystem.

We are gearing up to offer two Hedgerow Success Tours in June. We'll spend the day learning from the farmers, Thurston Conservation District, and the hedgerow designers about how the hedgerows will meet the farmers' goals, how they were installed, and share about the successes and challenges.

In preparation, we are also hosting several morning and evening maintenance parties to help control weeds, protect the plants from the elk and deer, and prepare the hedgerows for our upcoming tours. The maintenance parties are a great way to learn informally about these hedgerows while directly supporting this important work!

We'd love to have you join us for the Success Tours and/or the maintenance parties.

Come learn about why we're obsessed with hedgerows! We have several maintenance parties this summer (and two of them are next week: 5/26 and 5/29). We'll informally share about how these hedgerows will meet the farmers' goals and share insights about the lessons we've learned while we work towards protecting the plants from weeds and elk. Plus, this will be a fun way to practice your native plant ID while connecting with lovely people.

See you then!
