Olympia Ecosystems

Olympia Ecosystems We are driven by our understanding of the intrinsic value of all creatures in our ecosystem.

Olympia Ecosystems (OlyEcosystems) is an urban land trust whose focus is the preservation and restoration of key ecosystems in and around the area of Olympia, Washington. We are a growing group of Olympia citizens, businesses and environmental organizations who propose to restore and re-wild the urban shoreline and associated riparian corridors of Budd Inlet and the Deschutes Esturary such that it

becomes quality habitat, enabling our region's wildlife to persist and thrive for future generations. We are united in our value of biodiversity and believe that our human community is enriched by and defined by our relationship to the wilderness in our midst.

A demonstration of how Ruth's flood imagery has helped us to improve our model predictions (calibration). The images are side-by-side images and model predictions.

A note on hydrology... although the floods peaked between a 3-to-6-year event, the imagery was taken at lower flow conditions. Based on the timestamps of the flights, we estimated that the images were taken at a 1.8-year flood on the 9th and a 1.4 year flood on the 11th.

Water is our jam, but this has been… a lot. We were able to get drones up (Thank you, Mike Ruth!) to gain valuable perspective over Deschutes River Preserve. Flood events provide valuable data to validate and calibrate our models for water flow in this complex system. Floods teach us about river dynamics and help us to work with them as we plan restoration and flood risk mitigation into the future. On site, we’re collecting data with that include water temperature and surface water elevation. How high did it get across the lower field? See the last slide! Stay safe everyone.

It is time to plant! Thanks to donations through the Give Local campaign, we have ordered ~650 trees, shrubs, sedges, rushes, and wildflower seed to vegetate the area around the pond. Please join us on Saturday, December 20th, to get all these plants in the ground!
