On April 9th, our Chaplain Coordinator Rob Bradley taught the incident command system (ICS) learning module at the spring Chaplain Academy “Boots on the Ground” training in Burien, coordinated by the Tacoma Pierce County Chaplains (TPCC). One veteran Olympia Fire Department firefighter attended the 4-day academy in preparation for becoming a chaplain. CAPS-TC Board Member Bob Zych also attended the one day of the training Academy as an observer.
This day focused on showing Chaplains how police officers and firefighters respond to incidents, as well as a trip to the King County morgue. The daylong session included police ride-along scenarios, demonstrating the good ones, the bad ones, and the ugly ones. Other subject matter presented included the incident command system, strategies for enhancing the Chaplains role, and an impressive demonstration of fire equipment by the Seattle Fire Department. Phoebe, the Seattle Chaplain therapy dog, also made a much-welcomed cameo appearance when there was a “paws” in the action. The day was fast-paced and fully packed.
Thanks to our TPCC partners and others for coordinating this critical training experience. The Academy is held twice each year at the training facility in Burien. The next session is scheduled for the fall.
