I mourn with my fellow firefighters and his family. Rest in peace.

The Walla Walla Fire Department and the Walla Walla Professional Firefighters are deeply saddened to announce the Line of Duty Death of Fire Engineer Ryan Pleasants who passed away this morning while on duty.

Ryan was a 20 year veteran of the Walla Walla Fire Department. He served the Walla Walla Valley as a firefighter/medic for the first 19 years of his career and was promoted to Engineer in July.

Ryan will be forever missed by all his brothers and sisters of the WWFD. Our deepest condolences go out to his Family and his community.

Currently Walla Walla Fire District 4, College Place Fire Department, Richland Fire Department, and Pasco Fire Department have provided apparatus and personnel to cover all calls for the City of Walla Walla for us during this difficult time.

We appreciate all the overwhelming prayers and love that we have already received. Currently, no other support is needed.

Memorial service plans to be announced.

Trey Irwin, Clarkston Professional Firefighters Local 2299 member was chosen to serve on the new WSCFF Behavioral Health Committee. The work of this committee will be to make better lives for firefighters and EMS in Washington State.

Your WSCFF has an essential duty to foster work environments that support our members in practicing better behavioral health and we know employees of the fire and emergency medical services experience a higher percentage of behavioral health difficulties than the general population. The labor movement must do a better job of promoting behavioral health, reducing stigma around it, and developing training opportunities for growth and understanding of behavioral health issues. The WSCFF Executive Board encourages affiliated locals to establish Peer Support programs with their employers and to promote more robust wellness practices, psychoeducation, and behavioral health practices that reduce negative behavioral health stigma and outcomes.

As well the WSCFF, Washington Fire Chiefs and Washington State Department of Labor & Industries are working together to build a Washington State Collaborative that the WSCFF Behavioral Health Committee will participate in. We look forward to the great work they will do together.
