October 16, 2026: Every fall the lake water “turns over” which means the bottom layer rises to the top. At that time, it tends to be when the lake has an algae bloom.

Thurston County sent this notice today:

Staff have received lab results for the algae bloom sample taken at Pattison Lake.

Microcystin: 135.0 µg/L which is above the state recreational guideline of 8.0 µg/L.

Staff will collect one sample per week until toxin levels are below regulatory guidelines for two consecutive weeks. Notifications will be sent when samples are collected and when results are available.

When there is an algae bloom present or you suspect that an algae bloom is occurring, we recommend extra precautions be taken to avoid the health risks posed by potential toxins.

Do not drink the lake water.
Avoid contact with water containing algae. Do not swim or water ski in areas with algae.
Keep pets and livestock away from areas where algae blooms are present.
When fishing, use only catch-and-release of any fish caught during an algae bloom.
Do not eat fish that come from the lake during an algae bloom.
Avoid areas of scum when boating.

We have an opening for one board position on the Pattison Lake Association board. The board meets four times a year, including the annual meeting. Our primary focus is educating lake homeowners about aquatic plants and how to minimize our gardening impacts on the lake. We also hold social and informational events, so we can get to know our neighbors and learn at the same time. It’s a fun group. Join us!

Ideally the candidate should have the time to serve on the board and help with activities. Backgrounds and experience in education, environment, event planning and professional communications are a plus. Contact us at [email protected]

Two annual lake meetings: Mark your calendars!

Oct. 28, 5:30 p.m., Pattison Lake Management District annual meeting, Heritage Hall, Thurston County Fairgrounds, off of Carpenter Road. Steering committee members will talk about the various lake projects they are working on and how the Ecology grants have funded many of the projects.

Nov. 5, 7-9 p.m., Pattison Lake Association annual meeting, Lacey Community Center, off of Pacific Ave. Guest speaker will talk about aquatic plants in the lake and the effectiveness of herbicide treatment on Eurasian Watermilfoil. Register: [email protected]

Who wants to get more involved in the Pattison Lake Association? We need a couple more people to join our board, plus we need more volunteers for a variety of projects coming up in 2027. Our board meets four times a year including the annual meeting. We'd like someone with non-profit board experience, familiarity with environmental, lake or water quality topics, and someone who is willing to become engaged in our causes.
