Commemorating February 26, 1993
Today commemorates the 33rd anniversary of the February 26, 1993, bombing at the World Trade Center. That morning, approximately 50,000 people reported to work throughout the World Trade Center complex. By midday, a terrorist attack had taken the lives of six innocent individuals: John DiGiovanni, Robert Kirkpatrick, Stephen Knapp, William Macko, Wilfredo Mercado, and Monica Rodriguez Smith, who was pregnant when she was killed. We come together today to honor those who were lost, reflect on our collective grief, and recognize the sacrifices of the more than 1,000 people who were injured, along with the several hundred police officers, firefighters, and rescue personnel who answered the call of service.
This year's commemorative ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. at the northwest corner of the North Pool, in the vicinity of panel N-73. We will observe a moment of silence at 12:18 p.m. when the attack occurred. We invite you to watch this ceremony live.
Due to the anticipated storm, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will close early — at 5 p.m. — on Sunday, the 22nd, and remain closed on Monday, the 23rd. We will accommodate all requests to reschedule the date or time of your visit. Please contact [email protected] for assistance.
