Big River Animal Society, Inc. Join us in building a better tomorrow for lost, abused, and abandoned animals.

Our Story

Located in northwest Mississippi, Big River Animal Society was formed in 2014 following a visit to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. After learning “How to Start and Run an Animal Sanctuary”, our epiphany was that the way to fight against animal homelessness and senseless killing is to create a safe, compassionate and healing place. While our mission may expand over time, ou

r main focus will always be to create a positive solution for animals who end up in kill shelters throughout the South. Whether caught as strays or dumped by their owners, all animals are deserving of a good life on this earth. Although we live in a far from perfect world, it is every human’s obligation to defend the lost, the weak, the abandoned, the sick, the abused and injured for all living creatures. Big River was named for the mighty Mississippi river that flows through the center of the continental United States, specifically bordering the states of Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. We know well the dangers that lurk for animals in our area so we first concentrate our efforts here. Dog fighting, puppy mills, horrific animal abuse, irresponsible pet owners, overpopulation, and heart worm disease – we’ve seen it all. Yet, we look again at the river which is a natural source of life and a metaphor for the journey. Taking a broken animal on this journey to a new and better life is our purpose so we become one with the river of life. If you would like to be part of a positive team dedicated to making the world a better place by helping animals in need, please join us!

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.
Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.
Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.
The ship is our community at large.
The iceberg is comprised of careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.

URGENT COURTESY POST!!!

URGENT! Desoto County Animal Shelter, Nesbit MS, Dog on Euthanasia List! 🆘❗️🆘❗️
George Grady is a sweet dog whose time is almost up and his situation is dire. He needs a RESCUE to help him. If he does not find a rescue that can take him, he will be put down. He has to go to a rescue group and can not be adopted by a individual from the shelter. George Grady ID-46550 and he’s at the Desoto County Animal Shelter, Nesbit, MS.
George Grady is up to date on vaccinations, including rabies.
You can call the shelter(662-469-8004) at anytime from Monday to Friday during open hours 8 am to 5 pm. Or Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm. They are located BEHIND, 2373 Gwynn RD. Nesbit, MS 38651
He was a stray rescued back in May after he had been dumped and was starving. He is finished with HW treatment; neutered and completely vetted. He has been at the shelter for a while where he was in sick bay for kennel cough and while he was being moved to the adoption area he nipped one of the volunteers walking by. (I am not sure what the situation was) He did not break the skin. He has never showed any aggression before. Now he is deemed as un-adoptable through the shelter. He is just tired of being locked up at the boarding facility and shelter 24/7 not getting the attention he needs. He is stressed. He was boarded while at the vets office going through treatment but when he was taken home for weekends by the staff he was great. He is described as the sweetest dog who loves affection and the shelter loves him. He is smart, lovable, weighs 40 lbs. and is about 2 years old.
He DOES NOT like cats. Now his fate is sealed at the shelter...and his time is limited. I know everyone is FULL....but if any of you has any ideas or room, please contact Mary Ann Doolittle Byrne via email at [email protected].

It seems most of us are struggling these days but none more than adoptable animals in dire need. Where does the mentality of judgement fit in for those who sit in cozy homes and offices looking down on others working the front lines? I’ve seen this recently from those who should know better but perhaps have forgotten. This is extremely hard, backbreaking work, especially in the heat of the Summer. Not all of us have the luxuries of multi-million dollar facilities with huge resources. Grants and awards are mostly given to the biggest, the most, the best perceived numbers - not to those who really need it to save that next animal abandoned, abused, in need of medical and emotional healing. If we’re all in this for the right reasons then we should learn to support one another.
