Our not so little Eaglet made it down from our sister organization Woodside Wildlife Rescue to prepare for surgery on his leg that had broken when its nest was destroyed in a storm. Wildlife director Regina Marie Mason made sure this fella was transported safely in!

Dr. Lisa, Chris and I prepare for surgery by radiographing the eaglets leg while it was still in the splint when we found some wonderful news. Due to the skill and Eagle eye ( pun intended) of Dr. Jenna Dessauer DVM of Gulf Coast Veterinary Emergency Hospital the splint/brace Dr. Dessauer applied prior transport to the leg set it absolutely perfect! Dr. Lisa and I agreed that this eaglet will NOT need surgery. Take a look at the line up of the before and after. The bone has already started to heal. Great Job Woodside and veterinary team !

This will be a long recovery still however we expect this eaglet to make a full recovery and be returned to his home with its family ! 🦅

It’s officially baby season !!!! Volunteer Janet Shove did a great job with getting this wee little fella to the fledgling stage. This Great Horned Owl is being moved into an enclosure with another Great Horned Owl patient for him to to be evaluated to foster this baby 🦉

These babies can imprint so fast so it is very important we take all steps necessary to prevent that including dressing up like stealth army rangers so they do not see humans feeding and caring for them.

Did you know that Magnolia Wildlife is the only local Avian rehabber that consist of all volunteers? 100% of all donations go towards the patients and none to salaries. I have gotten asked why I don’t don’t post often for donations. We post for donations when we have a true need for a patient or supplies. It’s not that we don’t have patients, we take in patients everyday !

We want to give a big shout to B and L heating and air for stocking us up for supplies for upcoming season. We can not thank them enough for our continuing support !!!

MDWFP Rhodes brought us in the severely emaciated Great Horned Owl! Volunteer Davis Ruffin is taking great care of this fella ensuring he is getting the nutrition needs and warmth he needs to heal !

This newest incubator was also provided by B & L Heating and Air LLC and is a key component of keeping his temperature regulated.

How to help our wild birds in the winter

We are facing some serious cold temps! Here are a few tips on how you can helps our feathered friends out during this time.

MAKESHIFT SHELTERS - make a shelter from the wind out something you have at home with leaves for the flooring for example

A old tent

Cardboard box on its side

A cooler on its side

A 5 gallon bucket on its side

WATER

If possible help with water that does not freeze! For example an old crockpot on warm plugged up on your porch ( goodwill has them cheap with no lids)

Fill your crock pot half full of rocks or wood chunks and cover with water but leave enough for them to stand on the rocks so they can drink the water with dry feet.

(Please practice safety and unplug at night or when you are not home )

SUPPLEMENT FOOD

Wild Birds Unlimited of Southaven, MS has an amazing selection of food packed with Protien to help during this cold

Place it on the porch by your water source, sprinkle under a vehicle, and inside your makeshift shelters

If you find an injured birds don’t hesitate to call Magnolia Wildlife Education, Conservation and Rehabilitation, Inc. at 901-254-4295 we will be happy to help !!! 🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛
