Tewksbury Land Trust

Tewksbury Land Trust The Tewksbury Land Trust is a non-profit organization dedicated to
land preservation and stewardship. We are grateful.

More than twenty years have passed since the Tewksbury Land Trust (TLT) held its first meeting. It was 1994, Bill Clinton was in the White House, the Dow finished the year at 3,834 and suburban sprawl was consuming New Jersey farmland and open space at an unprecedented rate -- the highest in the country. So much has changed in the world around us over the past 20 years, but the charm and quality o

f life in Tewksbury has endured. A group of local residents organized TLT to actively promote the preservation of the town’s existing agriculture, open space and historic character. The TLT's leadership has always emphasized the need to work with, and reach out to, local residents concerning the importance of protecting natural areas and historic features, creating linkages and greenway corridors and preserving the culture and natural heritage of Tewksbury and the surrounding area. From the start, TLT has partnered with other groups to build support for conservation efforts and to establish effective stewardship programs to care for this special place. We are grateful for the support we have received from the Township of Tewksbury, the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the New Jersey's Green Acres Program. We are indeed fortunate to live in this place where government at all levels is an active funding partner in our preservation efforts. We are grateful for all the partnerships we have been a part of over the past 20 years. The New Jersey Conservation Foundation, Raritan Headwaters Association, Hunterdon Land Trust, The Lamington Conservancy, The Open Space Institute, Tewksbury Trail Association, New Jersey Audubon Society, and other organizations, have played a big part in our accomplishments. As everyone in this business knows land conservation can get very complicated and we are grateful for the expertise we receive from all of our professional firms (legal, surveyor, appraisal, environmental, land acquisition, land stewardship, and accounting) as they all have contributed to our achievements, often at discounted rates. Most of all, we are grateful for the broad community support we receive each and every year from individuals and families who live here and appreciate the importance of our mission. Over the past 20 years, with your support, we have been instrumental in preserving over 700 acres of Tewksbury’s landscape. The Lance Farm on Fox Hill Road, The Christmas Tree Farm on Saw Mill Road and the Jeffrey Property on Water Street are spectacular properties that have been preserved in perpetuity for the enjoyment of this and future generations. Our partnerships in preserving Hill and Dale Farm, Fox Hill Preserve and the Elizabethtown Reservoir have made these properties available for public enjoyment. These are just a sampling of the significant accomplishment we have attained.

Don't count out our Wild Bergamot too soon, it is still used for tea! As a relative of the mint family, its flavor will tend to mint and not citrus.

It's Kit Season!

So why not start out with a bit of history! The to our is actually the Gray fox, while this video highlights the red fox, which may or may not be a true native to New Jersey.

According to New Jersey Fish & Wildlife "Conflicting records and a presumed difference between the native red fox and the introduced European red fox caused confusion concerning early accounts regarding the distribution and introduction of the red fox in North America." Either variety pose no harm to humans, however, like any wild animal, they can contract and spread disease.

More concerning is the threat they pose to small livestock and pets. Strong fencing and proper oversight is recommended on private property. That said, red foxes are quite prevalent in our area and "Mom" can get a bit grumpy if she senses danger to her young. Should you happen to encounter a red or gray fox on trail, please give a wide berth. As with any protective parent, it is especially imperative if there are kits or offspring present.

While we're more likely to encounter red fox, a fun fact about their native relative, the gray fox? They can climb trees! Preferring woodlands to farmlands, the undisputed the gray fox is less likely to be seen, but a beauty to behold!

Stay safe on the trail as spring brings new life out of their dens and into our backyards. Click the link below for our upcoming events and we'll see you on the trails!

A picture is worth a thousand words... or in this case, a video! Thanks to our friend and esteemed supporter for providing us with our inspiration, an early harbinger of spring, the Spring Peeper!

A tiny tree frog with a big voice, you've probably heard them, but may not have seen one up close. They are able to change color to blend into their surroundings, but showcase an "'X'" marks the spot" marking on their back.

These adorable amphibians are some of the the first to get a jump on the spring season. Those "peeps" are actually motivated males serenading their female counterparts as mating season commences.

What's even more impressive is their ability to survive frigid winter conditions in the Amazingly, they are able to protect themselves as they actually freeze and then thaw again in spring!

Listen for them if you find yourself out on trail in the evening hours. Join us for our April events and maybe we'll be lucky enough to see one up close (link below!)
