SUNY OW STEAM Presents
Cracked Ice: A Conversation Between Del Geist and Eleanor Heartney
Date: Wednesday, March 4, 2026
Time: 2:40 PM – 4:20 PM
Location: Recital Hall, SUNY Old Westbury
Join us for an engaging conversation about Cracked Ice, a series of three monumental sculptural works by Del Geist, installed on the campus of SUNY Old Westbury. This program marks the third installment of the OW STEAM Colloquium Series.
Created from stone and stainless steel, Cracked Ice evokes massive boulders once suspended and transported by ancient glaciers—now released as the ice recedes. Each structure is intentionally positioned to appear slightly precarious, suggesting imbalance and instability. The works serve as a powerful metaphor for a warming planet and the accelerating realities of climate change.
Art critic and curator Eleanor Heartney joins Geist to explore the conceptual, material, and environmental dimensions of the project. Their dialogue will reflect on the intersections of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM), and consider art’s vital role in shaping public understanding of ecological transformation.
A reception will follow from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM near the sculptures outside the Campus Center.
Free and open to the public.
Presented by SUNY OW STEAM and the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery.

On February 26, 2026, Andres Senra led a participatory workshop focusing on creative processes, care, and empowerment. Students from three classes participated in making small objects conceived as protective amulets and talismans. The workshop encouraged reflection on self-care, community, and art as a tool for critical expression! We thank for his passionate commitment as an educator, inspiring our students during this workshop!

OPENING TODAY ✨
SAFE SPACE — Andrés Senra
The Amelie A. Wallace Gallery at SUNY Old Westbury is proud to present "Safe Space," a major retrospective of Spanish artist Andrés Senra, opening today and on view from February 11 – March 13, 2026.
Bringing together projects created over the past two decades in Madrid, Berlin, and New York, "Safe Space" traces the evolution of Senra’s practice across shifting political climates, social struggles, and deeply personal histories. Moving between past and present, the exhibition re-reads earlier works through the urgency of now—at a moment marked by the global rise of far-right movements and increasing threats to LGBTQ+ lives and rights.
Spanning the 1990s to today, the exhibition features film, large-scale projections, hanging fabric works, works-on-paper, and paintings, transforming the gallery into a kaleidoscopic, maximalist environment shaped by resistance, care, visibility, and survival.
Rooted in q***r activism during the AIDS crisis in 1990s Madrid, Senra’s work has continually expanded—moving from documentation and self-representation into collective actions, symbolic monuments, speculative futures, and socially engaged projects. His practice confronts erasure, precarity, state violence, and ecological collapse, while also holding space for tenderness, imagination, and utopia.

Still, We Rise: Visionaries, Missionaries, and Transformations marks the 60th anniversary of SUNY Old Westbury by tracing the institution's evolution from its glacial origins to its ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and social justice. Curated by Dr. Gilda Zwerman, Dr. Tom DelGiudice, and Dr. Hyewon Yi, supported with archival research by Christa Devirgillo, the exhibition spans three floors of the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery to chart the College's deep ties to place, history, and activism.

James Dooley, former Director of Photography for Newsday and New York Newsday, sat down with us on September 26, 2025, to discuss his experience working with Moises Saman, who was a staff photographer at Newsday. Saman’s early photographs of the Iraq War were taken during his time there. We’re adding two special viewing hours — October 15 & 16! Don’t miss your last chance to see Moises Saman: The Ghosts of History this week.

📍 Amelie A. Wallace Gallery, SUNY Old Westbury
🗓 September 10 – October 10, 2025
The Amelie A. Wallace Gallery is honored to present The Ghosts of History, a solo exhibition by award-winning Magnum photographer Moises Saman, marking the 21st anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq. Featuring more than fifty photographs alongside military maps, transcripts, satellite images, and other archival materials, the exhibition examines the dissonance between official narratives of war and the lived experiences of Iraqis. Saman’s work invites us to consider “who has the power to narrate a conflict, who determines the frame, and which lives are remembered—or forgotten.”
📅 Events
– Reception & Talk with Isabella Howard (Magnum Photos): Monday, September 15, 2:30–4:30 pm
– Talk by Moises Saman (Zoom, registration required): Thursday, September 25, 10–11:30 am
Organized by Magnum Photos in collaboration with the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College, The Ghosts of History offers a critical and timely lens on the enduring afterlives of the Iraq War, raising urgent questions about memory, power, and the politics of representation.
