A Message from Teague at Mt Peale Sanctuary: "The town of Old La Sal has been under a devastating forest fire (The Deer Creek Fire) for the last few days. The first day it destroyed 4 homes, the second day it destroyed 10 homes. As of right now the fire is circling around, it continues to rage and creating firenado's. The first day I wasn't on property and I received a call that there was a fire on the North side of my property at Deer Haven and they were in the process of evacuating. I phoned Verd and Kathy Byrne and they ran over to the Northern side of my property to get the sanctuary horses that were grazing there, and with the help of Sam Page took them to a safe place. Thank God for them, because only hours later that part of the land was completely engulfed in flames.
When I got home, we were able to get the rest of the horses to a safe place. We were under our second evacuation yesterday, and at this point in time, we have an evacuation plan in place if we need to evacuate again.
So far, the air is dark with a lot of smoke. The animals are faring through all that deep smoke, they seem to be ok, they are being loved, fed and watered well by this community. The community at hand, Sharon Stubbs, Phil, Sean, all of those that have been close at hand watching and caring for the horses everyday to make sure that we don't miss a moment when there is a flare up. I want to thank Katrina Webster, who lead the action plan with the support of Mary Herbert and Sharon Stubbs. We have people like Jaric Robinson that have created fire lines around the area so we can be so much safer. There has been so much love in this community towards safety for all of us, including the animals. We feel very blessed that none of the domestic animals have perished. We feel bad about the wildlife that have perished, this is baby season and a lot of them are not strong enough to get up and get out, so we mourn those lives because all animals have feelings and they all experience fear.
We are grateful for this community and how they have pulled together. We are grateful for the support from the Mt. Peale Animal Sanctuary community, those of you who have contacted me and offered service, we have been very grateful for that showing of love.
At this point in time we feel like we are the safest we have been, and we have plans if it does indeed curl around again.
Thank you to all of you for the love you have shown. Please keep praying for us. ๐"
