This is written so beautifully by the Alutiiq Museum so we wanted to share this. So sad to hear about the passing of one of our founders and our Chair for many, many years. She has given so generously of herself for the betterment of all Alaska Native peoples. Anyone who met Margaret knows how passionate she was about our cultures and we were all better to have known her. Deepest condolences to the family.

An Alutiiq legend has joined the ancestors. The board and staff of the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation & the Alutiiq Museum are deeply saddened by passing of Margaret Agnguarta Roberts (1948–2022), the chair of the Alutiiq Heritage Foundation Board of Directors and a life-long advocate for the Alutiiq people. Born and raised in Kodiak, Margaret was the daughter of Ronald Fadaoff of Woody Island and Martha Patarochin of Kodiak. She graduated from Kodiak High School in 1967 and married Gary Roberts in 1973. They have four children and numerous grandchildren. Margaret was well known for her leadership in the Alutiiq community. Learn more about her remarkable life: https://zcu.io/fJnJ

Who determines if a person is Alaska Native and how? This is one of the topics in a new series of handouts we developed to share a fuller, more accurate view of the forces that shape Alutiiq life. The so-called blob that brought warm surface water temperatures to the Gulf of Alaska between 2014 and 2016 has passed. But the effects are not all in the rearview mirror.

NIST’s Stacy Schuur never thought that she would be collecting sea bird eggs as a marine biologist, but that’s what she’s been doing for 22 years.

Why? Sea birds’ eggs reflect the life of the bird and its interactions in the environment. This can include the uptake of human made contaminants.

To track these contaminants in the environment, Stacy and her collaborators collect egg tissues for analysis and preservation. Learn more: https://www.nist.gov/blogs/taking-measure/finding-stamp-human-made-pollutants-seabird-eggs

Our deepest condolences to Ralph's family and to the Bristol Bay region. He was a tremendous leader for the region and for Alaska Native peoples as a whole. He will be deeply missed.
