In collaboration with World Central Kitchen, Davis Relief Fund will be giving out free dinner and meal kits tonight starting at 5pm at the porch of The Davis Country Store & Cafe.

After Helene, recovery has been hard but swift. We've dug in and came together as a community. Yesterday's wildfires knocked us all back on our heels. Tonight everyone needs a break from obligations, and we want to take care of one of them.

At 5pm we will be serving dinner from the porch. Chicken and wild rice meals with sides, cheddar jalapeño biscuits, and dessert. We also have meal kits boxes for anyone struggling with grocery bills now.

Wildfire in Old Fort, NC - 0% Contained; Evacuation Orders in Place for Affected Areas

Old Fort, NC – A wildfire burning in the Crooked Creek community of McDowell County remains at 0% containment and is estimated to have burned 150 acres at this time. The fire has prompted the issuance of evacuation orders for residents in the 3000-4500 block of Bat Cave Rd., Pine Cove Rd., Cherry Springs Rd., Roy Moore Rd., Juliet Drive, the 1000 block of Lavender Rd., and Comfy Cove Rd. This includes all private drives that turn off the roads listed above. As of 4:30 p.m. there are no expansions to the evacuation order for the Crooked Creek Fire. High winds continue to create dangerous fire conditions. Firefighters continue to focus on structure protection for multiple homes in the area and continue work on establishing fire containment lines.

Emergency services are urging residents in the affected areas to adhere to evacuation orders to ensure their safety. An emergency shelter is open at 203 East Main Street in Old Fort.

We have homes being repaired with no power, and our relief cabins are off grid with only power coming from a generator. But did you know, especially during this cold, running a generator 24/7 costs $400 to $600 a month in gasoline? For someone who has lost everything and is already struggling, adding a large monthly bill like this is devastating. We do what we can to supplement in gasoline donations and such, but for some this will be a year-long trek working with a generator. That means a conservative estimate of $400 per month translates to $4800 in cost that could be saved if a solar/wind kit is used.

We've crunched the numbers, and we think this system is the best option for the things needed to run to stay warm and keep food/medication cold. Plus it means we will never have to put anyone into a relief situation that will cost them the amount of a new car payment.

North Carolina has launched Disaster Energy Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance programs to support households impacted by Hurricane Helene. Eligible residents can apply for help with utility bills, furnace repairs, heating costs, and one-time rent payments to prevent eviction. To qualify, households must meet income guidelines and demonstrate disaster-related losses. Applications are accepted in person at the McDowell County DSS (145 E. Court St, Marion) or by phone at (828) 652-3355. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with direct payments made to landlords for rental assistance.

Starting Tuesday, January 21st, MATCH and HOP will also be onsite to provide information on tax preparation, food boxes and more.

Please note that all CIP/LIEAP funds for McDowell County have been exhausted at this time. If more of those funds are allocated, it will be announced.

DSS will be closed Monday, January 20th in observance of MLK Day.

Hey churches! We need to know who you recommend from your church family for the following items. We want to make sure it is getting to those who need it, not those who are going to sell it or just taking to get free things.

We have Buddy heaters. Big ones, medium ones and small ones. We have the propane to go with them.

We have a wood burning stove. The long thin kind you can get at tractor supply. It comes with 16 feet of chimney pipe. Its 22x32 inches. Its older, needs a new seal.

We have some coil spring mattresses. Twin size. They are not thick, but they get you off the floor and work well on a cot.

We have hot tents. And a very large military barracks type tent.

Please message us directly, or email us at [email protected] to give us any names or contact info of who you recommend.
