We’re excited to kick off National Trails Day weekend by celebrating the reopening of the Gateway Trailhead in Old Fort!

Hurricane Helene flooded this area, submerging the trailhead, washing out road bridges, and damaging trails. Over the last 18 months, an incredible amount of work has gone into rebuilding and restoring access — including a brand new U.S. Forest Service bridge over Jarrett Creek and 8 miles of new trail accessible from the trailhead.

Join us Friday at 4:30 PM as we gather for the celebration, with an official ribbon cutting and remarks from the U.S. Forest Service, G5 Trail Collective, and community leaders beginning at 5 PM.

Then keep the celebration going at the Trails & Trains Festival in downtown Old Fort. It’s a great weekend to be in Old Fort — we hope to see you there!

Now open! Thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who helped in this collaborative effort!

National Trails Day, on June 6, means a lot to our communities as we recover from Hurricane Helene. In the Grandfather Ranger District on Pisgah National Forest we are partnering with The G5 Trail Collective to rebuild the Old Fort Gateway Trailhead. This area flooded during Hurricane Helene, submerging the trailhead, washing out road bridges, and damaging trails. Over the last 18 months, a huge amount of effort has gone into rebuilding the area – not only the restoration of the trailhead, but the new US Forest Service bridge, Jarrett Creek Road Bridge, over Curtis Creek and 8 miles of new trail accessed from the trailhead.

To celebrate this important milestone, the community will be hosting a grand reopening of the Gateway Trailhead, Friday June 5th from 4-6pm. Stick around on June 6th to volunteer to restore storm damage on the Hickory Branch Trail at the Curtis Creek Campground from 10am to 2pm.

Join us to celebrate National Trails Day and our community’s resilience.

The G5 Trail Collective is looking for a Disaster Information Specialist to help connect the public with timely information about trails, roads, recreation sites, and ongoing disaster recovery efforts across the Grandfather Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest. This role supports visitors both in the office and out in the field through public outreach, trailhead information, social media, and on-the-ground assessments.

Based out of the U.S. Forest Service office in Nebo, NC, this position plays an important role in Helene Recovery by keeping communities and forest visitors informed as restoration work continues across the district. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator with experience using or managing public lands and an interest in public service and outdoor recreation.
