Brad and Karen, loyal MTC participants, started the first phase of their self-directed, environmentally focused improvement project during the spring thaw. They removed discarded debris along the snowmobile trail in Town of Inlet Parks. They will continue their efforts to clean the trails and shoreline throughout the summer.
Thank you both for your enthusiasm, dedication, and continued support to help MTC! ❤

Common Merganser — Fun Facts!
• “Plunging goose”: Their name comes from Latin, reflecting their ability to dive deep to hunt fish.
• Built for fishing: Nicknamed “sawbills,” they have ~160 tiny serrations on their beaks to grip slippery prey.
• Underwater vision: A special third eyelid acts like goggles, helping them see clearly while diving.
• Unique nesting: They nest in tree cavities near rivers and lakes—and chicks leap from high nests soon after hatching.

Why they matter:
As top predators in aquatic ecosystems, mergansers are sensitive to pollution, making them useful indicators of environmental health.

How to help:
Protect clean waterways, reduce pollution, and support nesting habitats.

Learning about our wildlife and how to protect it is a great self-directed, environmentally focused project for the 6th Annual MTC Event! Register today at www.maintainthechain.net and let us know what you learn!!! FREE MTC beach towels for who register and complete a project!

Lead fishing tackle is a leading cause of adult loon mortality, with ingestion of a single sinker or jig causing fatal poisoning within a few weeks.

The Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation, with support from MTC, created hundreds of lead-free tackle boxes to help teach children about the harmful effects of lead fishing tackle on wildlife. This summer, the Center will expand its outreach through engaging, kid-friendly programs in which these free tackle boxes will be distributed to promote safer, wildlife-friendly fishing practices.

Every year, our incredible MTC participants turn passion into action! From building rain barrels to planting native species, they’re helping protect our lakes and preserve the natural beauty of the .

Rain barrels reduce runoff and keep pollutants out of our lakes, while native plants strengthen shorelines, support wildlife, and improve water quality.

Together, these individual projects make a huge impact. This is what community-driven conservation looks like! Thank you and hope to see you (and your friends) again this summer!
