BLM is doing a controlled burn up transfer road approximately 150 acres.  Smoke may be visible in the surrounding area during the burn. This is a planned, controlled operation, so there is no need to call 911 to report smoke associated with this burn.

We invite our community to our Fire Station Open House on September 11. Meet your local first responders, tour the station and apparatus, learn about fire safety, enjoy a hamburger or hot dog, and help us remember the significance of this day together.

Montrose County to Enter Stage 2 Fire Restrictions

Sheriff Gene R. Lillard advises that Montrose County's unincorporated areas will enter Stage 2 Fire Restrictions effective 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, due to continued hot, dry conditions and an increased wildfire risk.

The restrictions apply to both the East End and West End of Montrose County and will remain in effect until rescinded by the Sheriff.

The decision to move to Stage 2 Fire Restrictions follows ongoing evaluation of local fire conditions with area fire agencies and land management partners. Recent weather, critically dry vegetation, and the potential for rapidly spreading wildfires have required additional restrictions to protect lives, property, and natural resources.

The Montrose County Sheriff's Office recognizes that our community understands the devastating impact wildfires can have. A single moment of carelessness can lead to lasting consequences for our neighbors, firefighters, homes, businesses, livestock, and public lands. Please do your part to help prevent human-caused wildfires by using caution and following all fire restrictions.
