I promised you more...

> 🚨 HERE’S ANOTHER KANSAS RULE, THIS ONE KILLS KITTENS.

Imagine a litter of five orphaned, 3-week-old kittens is brought to a Kansas animal shelter on Thursday morning.

They have no mother. At this age, they need to be bottle-fed every few hours, kept warm and monitored closely. A trained foster is ready and willing to take them home and provide that care.

But the kittens can’t go.

Kansas law requires stray animals to be held for three full business days, and beginning in 2024, KDA began requiring neonatal kittens to physically remain in the shelter during that hold.

So let’s count.

🐾 Thursday: Intake day. Doesn’t count.
🐾 Friday: Business day #1
🐾 Saturday: Doesn’t count
🐾 Sunday: Doesn’t count
🐾 Monday: Holiday. Doesn’t count
🐾 Tuesday: Business day #2
🐾 Wednesday: Business day #3
🐾 Thursday: They can finally leave for foster care

Three business days just became seven actual days.

There is one rather enormous problem.

Three-week-old orphaned kittens cannot take care of themselves for seven days.

They need to be fed every few hours. They need help regulating their body temperature. Depending on their age, they may even need help eliminating.

Animal shelters generally don’t have employees sitting in the building around the clock bottle-feeding kittens.

Before KDA changed its interpretation of the law, shelters could send these babies to trained foster homes immediately. Their pictures were taken and made available to the public during the stray hold so an owner could still find and reclaim them.

The kittens got the care they needed.

The owner’s right to reclaim them was preserved.

Everybody won.

Now the kittens have to stay in the building.

And if the shelter cannot provide round-the-clock neonatal care, there is only one humane option left:

Euthanasia.

This became serious enough that legislation was introduced this year specifically to fix it.

SB 344 would have allowed neonatal puppies and kittens who need care the shelter cannot provide to go to foster homes during their stray hold, while still requiring their photos to be available so owners could find and reclaim them.

The Kansas Senate passed it 40–0.

Not one senator voted against it.

It made it through the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.

Then it died without receiving a final House vote.

Even KDA supported the neonatal foster provision.

And yet, here we are.

A foster can be standing outside the shelter ready to take five tiny kittens home and feed them every three hours.

Kansas says they have to stay inside instead.

And sometimes that means they die there.

We can do better than this.

📣 Contact your Kansas legislators. Tell them you expect them to fix the neonatal stray-hold law in the 2027 legislative session.

While you’re at it, ask them why a rescue needs government permission to continue caring for an animal after 12 months.

📣 Contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture, too. Tell them that laws and regulations intended to protect animals should not prevent the very care necessary to keep them alive.

This isn’t partisan.

It isn’t complicated.

Kansas can protect an owner’s right to reclaim a lost pet without killing orphaned kittens in the process.

🔥 BUDDY IS READY FOR HIS NEW BEST FRIEND! 🐾❤️

Remember Buddy? He’s the 6-year-old brown tabby who was injured in an apartment fire in early July.

He’s healed. His whiskers are growing back. And now this sweet boy is officially AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! 🎉

Buddy has had quite enough excitement for one lifetime, thank you very much. What he’d like now is a calm home, a comfortable place to nap, plenty of treats, and a Best Friend of his very own.

❤️ About Buddy

Buddy is a gentle, sweet boy who loves pets, long strokes down his back, a little sweet talk, and treats — particularly the new Fancy Feast ones, because apparently surviving a fire does not preclude having standards.

He does need a little time to feel safe and trust new people. It took him about three weeks here. But once he decided we were acceptable, he blossomed. Now when we walk into his room, he comes to greet us and asks for attention.

🐱 Other cats? Absolutely. He gets along well with all the cats in the house.

🐶 Dogs? Buddy would prefer we not. Our dog receives a hiss every time she appears, just in case she has forgotten his position on the matter.

👧 Kids? A quiet home would be best. Older, respectful children — around 10+ — should be fine.

🩺 And his injuries?

Buddy is not expected to have any long-term problems from his burns beyond some cosmetic reminders of what he survived. The edges of his ears are scarred and his paw pads have some scarring, but he’s healed beautifully.

And yes — his whiskers are growing back! ❤️

Buddy has already survived the hard part.

Now he just needs someone to give him the easy part: a safe home, a little patience, and a Best Friend who plans to stick around.

🌈🐾 Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day.

August 28 is a day to remember the cats who are no longer with us, but somehow never really leave us.

The ones who slept in that spot. Who had that ridiculous habit. Who came running at the sound of a can opening from three rooms away. The ones we had for 18 years—and the ones we didn't get nearly enough time with.

Over the years, Cats Pawjamas has loved and lost cats in our own homes and in our rescue. Some were with us only briefly. Some fought incredibly hard. And every one of them mattered.

Today, we'd love to fill the comments with the cats you still carry with you. ❤️

Because a life doesn't have to be long to leave a very big hole when it's gone.

Have I got a story for you. ❤️

A few weeks ago, Cats Pawjamas was contacted by an emergency veterinary clinic in Wichita about a cat named Buddy.

On July 5, a fire tore through an apartment building in southeast Wichita. Six families were displaced.

Buddy was missing.

His owner searched for him for five days.

Five days after the fire, he found Buddy alive and took him to the emergency veterinary clinic.

That tells me something important: Buddy was loved. ❤️

His owner had just lost his home and his possessions, and now the cat he'd spent five days searching for was badly injured and needed emergency veterinary care.

Somewhere in everything that followed, contact between Buddy's owner and the clinic was lost. The clinic tried to reach him, but couldn't.

So they kept taking care of Buddy.

For three weeks, the veterinary team treated his burns and helped him heal while going through the process necessary for Buddy to be legally released to a rescue.

And somewhere along the way, Buddy became a bit of a clinic favorite.

We can see why. 🐾

Buddy came to Cats Pawjamas on July 31. He still needed some time to heal, pain medication, and ointment for the burns on his ears and paws.

But look at him now!

Buddy survived the fire. He survived five days on his own afterward. And he healed. ❤️

He's now ready to find his next Best Friend.

But before we do that, there's something else we'd really like to do.

We want to find Buddy's owner.

Not to ask him for anything. We just want the person who searched for five days after losing his home to know:

You found him. You got him help. And Buddy is okay.

I did a little sleuthing 🕵️‍♀️ and figured out which Wichita fire Buddy survived. Then I contacted two Wichita television stations to see if they could help us reach the families who lived in the apartment building.

KWCH 12 responded.

They asked if I would be willing to do an on-air interview and said they would reach out to the Wichita Fire Department to see what they could learn.

Their last line to me was:

"Maybe we can get a happy ending here."

That's exactly what we're hoping for.

KITTEN YOGA: The photographic evidence. 🧘‍♀️🐈📸

As promised, here are the still photos from yesterday’s Kitten Yoga at Radiant Yoga

There was some actual yoga. There was a great deal of kitten cuddling. And there were kittens wandering around wondering why an entire room full of people had voluntarily placed themselves at floor level. 😂

Thank you again to Radiant Yoga for hosting us and to everyone who came out, loved on some kittens, and supported Cats Pawjamas Rescue Society. ❤️🐾

We had a great time — and judging by the photos, I think (most of) the kittens did too.

Oh, and we even had an adoption! Stella found her Best Friends!

Yesterday was KITTEN YOGA at Radiant Yoga! 🧘‍♀️🐈‍⬛🐾

By all appearances, everyone had a good time — although the kittens remain deeply confused about why the humans were stretching when there were perfectly good kittens available to pet.

A huge thank you to Radiant Yoga , everyone who joined us, and everyone who supports Cats Pawjamas. ❤️ Events like this are fun, slightly chaotic, and help us keep doing what we do for cats and kittens who need us.

Facebook has rules, because apparently kitten content requires governance. 🙄
