We were able to help a North Kitsap horse get needed farrier work… we were asked and granted the cost of the work to the horse owner.
It’s a community effort .. thanks to Glade Rankin and E.W. for helping.

We are getting the farm prepared for winter.

Fixing some fence posts , pushing the manure piles, cutting back branches, applying gravel to potential wet spots, adding gravel to paddocks , checking gates, checking gutters… we have a few more trials of rain to see where potential problems are with drainage.

We got the newest paddock graveled and will work on the fencing (replacing a run of wire)

Horse work is never done.

I noticed yesterday that Roscoe has “dapples”..this is the first time since he got here that I have seen dapples… sometimes they are hard to see on chestnut horses as chestnut horses lack black pigment and rarely show true dapples.

But these are called "bloom dapples," these transient patterns frequently appear in spring and summer after a horse sheds its winter coat.

While a horse must be genetically capable of dappling, a balanced diet rich in quality protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and trace minerals like copper and zinc—alongside regular grooming—helps make the pattern stand out. Dapples are widely admired as a visual sign of good metabolic health and a glossy coat.

Roscoe does have dapples in the right light.

Roscoe is set to go to the Jones Farm on the 19th.
Although I am happy, I am also a little bit sad. Roscoe is complicated.. he likes his grain warmed, he gets cold easily, he has a tendency to nip, he needs the farrier to be patient because he can’t bend his knees to accommodate the shoeing stand…he is sometimes picky about his hay.
Carrie (farm manager) and I have discussed all this ..albeit I sound like a mother hen…
The bottom line is that we can only see how he does at this beautiful farm and if he doesn’t thrive he can come home. Carrie is a close friend of mine and I have no worries that she will keep a close eye on him… I have never seen an unhappy horse at that farm..
This is the farm where Steele was born.❤️

A busy day… farriers, produce delivery, workers and afternoon chores .. filling water troughs and hay nets.

Molly got her hooves trimmed and so did Tate.
Tate’s ADD was in full gear and I don’t know who was more tired .. me or the farrier?!
