Daughters Rising

Daughters Rising Empower girls to end trafficking and violence against women. Unlike a lot of problems in developing countries, this is one that is actually getting worse.

Empower at-risk girls through education to end trafficking and exploitation in their communities and break the cycle of inter-generational poverty. As many as 2 million children are forced into prostitution every year more than half of them live in Asia. At the peak of the transatlantic slave trade, 80,000 slaves were transported from Africa to the new world. Today, more than 10 times as many wome

n are being forced into brothels or other forms of slavery. Every 30 seconds, another person becomes a victim. Women are lured by traffickers with false promises of low-skilled jobs such as domestic help, models, and other jobs, and are then forced to work as prostitutes. The good news is that our generation can end this horrible human rights violation and everyone has a role. It’s so important to shut down the perpetrators and save girls, but it’s also important to prevent it from happening to girls at all. We believe that teaching a girl about confidence, women’s rights and health can empower her against traffickers. We believe that with access to an education she can pursue her dreams.

On one hand, it’s deeply inspiring. We meet so many extraordinary young women — students who, by the age of 22, have already overcome more hardship and obstacles than many people face in a lifetime. Their resilience, determination, and hope for a better future are honestly incredible.

But it’s also heartbreaking.

Because of budget limitations, we have to turn away many deserving students every year. Saying no to a young woman who has worked so hard for the chance at higher education is one of the most difficult parts of this process.

If anyone would like to help us fulfill another girl’s dream of higher education, please consider donating; even small contributions can make a life-changing difference. ❤️

Each year we travel to the border town of Mae Sot to find potential scholarship recipients. The girls come from their refugee camps along the Thailand Myanmar border, and also IDP camps in Myanmar. We get to meet so many amazing students who have already overcome so many obstacles to fight for their dream of education.

DaughtersRising.org is a local organization based right here in Chiang Mai. Every year, we provide scholarships to girls fleeing conflict and refugee backgrounds from Myanmar, helping them access education and build a safer future.
Even with full tuition covered, university life is still a daily struggle—especially as many of their families are unable to work and support them.
We’re reaching out to ask: do you have a laptop or tablet you no longer use? 💻
A donated device can make a huge difference in a student’s ability to study, attend classes, and succeed.
You can post it to us, or we’re happy to arrange a pickup at a time and place that’s convenient for you.
Thank you for being part of a community that lifts others up 🙏
Please message us if you can help or want more details.

No matter what, schools must never be treated as military targets.

In Myanmar, between February 2021 and March 2026 (over five years), the illegal military group that relied on weapons and seized power by force attacked a total of 251 schools across the country using aircraft and bombs.

Because young children’s schools were bombed by aircraft during class hours, students and teachers lost their lives on the spot.

During the airstrike on 251 schools, a total of 276 people, including students, teachers, and children under the age of 10, lost their lives. Additionally, 686 people were seriously injured.

February 2021 and March 2026 (over five years), among the school bombing incidents, there were 20 mass-casualty events in which five or more people died, including 178 civilians, teachers, and young schoolchildren.

In over five years, Sagaing has suffered the highest number of airstrikes, with 58 schools being bombed.
In Rakhine, 30 schools were hit;
in Magway and Northern Shan, 27 schools;
in Kayin, 24 schools; and
in Chin, 21 schools were bombed.

Except for Yangon, Eastern Shan, and Naypyidaw, schools attended by young children across the country are currently being bombed by the illegal Myanmar military junta, led by Min Aung Hlaing, which operates behind the pro-military parliament and has claimed the title of President.

The secondary impacts of these bombings continue to affect parents who have lost their children, as well as surviving children and adults who directly experienced these events, all of whom are still suffering from severe psychological trauma.

This provides evidence that the illegal military junta led by Min Aung Hlaing, which seized power, is not only violating international humanitarian law (IHL) and committing war crimes, but is also carrying out mass killings of civilians, including children and women.

Note: The figure of 251 schools refers only to those that were bombed by aircraft. Schools that have been attacked with artillery, drones, or other means are not included in this count.

We’re honored to have been shortlisted for the Ockenden Prize this year.
While we didn’t win the award, being recognized alongside such inspiring organizations working with displaced communities around the world means more than we can say. Congratulations to the winners—and to everyone on the shortlist doing this important, often unseen work.

For small grassroots NGOs like ours, finding sustainable funding is one of the biggest challenges we face. It can be tough, uncertain, and at times overwhelming—but
We’ll keep showing up. We’ll keep fighting for the women and girls we serve. Congratulations .official
