Teach For America Oklahoma City One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Teach For America arrived in Tulsa in 2009.

In 2011, we expanded to include the state capital, Oklahoma City, allowing us to participate in exciting collaborative efforts for change in two of the state’s major metropolitan areas. Currently our alumni teach in districts across the state, serve as leaders in their communities, and continue to make an impact for our students. Our camera roll can’t keep up with the connections, memories, and moments captured from the 35th Anniversary Summit!

Last weekend, nearly 80 Oklahoma corps members, alumni, and staff joined over 8,000 attendees at Teach For America's 35th Anniversary Summit.

During the Summit, we experienced what we know to be true: together, we can provide all students with access to an excellent education. Now that we are home, we return to the students, communities, and work that matters most. That’s The Power of Us.

This weekend marks a milestone for Teach For America - 35 years of working to provide all students access to an excellent education. Check out today’s op ed in The 74 from our CEO, Aneesh Sohoni, which shares more about this moment.

As Aneesh writes, “Throughout Oklahoma City and Greater Tulsa, 145 corps members and alumni have been named Teachers of the Year since 2009, creating schools and classrooms where students feel known, challenged, and prepared to thrive.” Being recognized as Teacher of the Year at a school site exemplifies the leadership capabilities and influence of our network, which directly impacts a student’s experience and academic outcomes.

As we head to Vegas for the 35th Anniversary Summit, we celebrate where progress has been made, reckon with the important work that remains and look ahead to what this opportunity asks of us. We look forward to ensuring what happens in Vegas comes back to support our continued work alongside students, schools, and communities across Oklahoma.

At Teach For America’s 35th Anniversary Summit, we will celebrate the impact we’ve made together and leave inspired for the work ahead.

As part of the summit, alumni from across the country submitted concepts for ‘TFA Talks’, TED-style discussions that will cover ideas and happenings across education, health, policy, entrepreneurship & more.

Two alumni with connections to Oklahoma will share more about their work in this way. We can’t wait to connect with Diane D'Costa (Greater Tulsa ‘18) and Elsie Urueta Po***ck (St. Louis ‘08) during their ‘TFA Talks’.

And, Ray'Chel Wilson (Greater Tulsa ‘19) will be featured in the EdTech Pitch Competition, a space for alumni founders to pitch bold ideas that could shape the future of education during the summit.

Getting multiple perspectives around one table, focused on a key topic to move education forward doesn’t happen as often as it should. So we are changing that - starting in 2027, EduTalks will be a monthly fixture in Oklahoma City.

EduTalks are a cross-sector community conversation centered on a timely issue affecting education in OKC. Each EduTalk brings together a range of voices, with relevant expertise and experience on the topic.

In less than two weeks, we will join thousands of alumni, corps members, advocates, and partners in Las Vegas to celebrate 35 years of impact during the largest gathering of the Teach For America community in a decade.

Leading up to the Summit, we are spotlighting alumni who live or taught in Oklahoma who are bringing their perspectives to the big stage. We can’t wait to hear from Sophia Pappas (New Jersey ‘03), Matt Gress (Greater Tulsa ‘10), and Sadie Stockdale Jefferson, PhD (Oklahoma ‘10) on their contributions to increasing student access to excellent education.

When Patrick Cannon (Oklahoma City '16) temporarily relocated from OKC to Atlanta after completing the corps, he didn't go in cold. He connected with the local Teach For America network, and that became his way into the community. It provided introductions to prospective employers and a foothold in a city he didn't grow up in. Eight years into being an alum, it's the kind of thing that's kept him close to Teach For America: consistent community and professional growth he didn't have to build from scratch.

That's part of why he's one of over 70 members from our Oklahoma network headed to Vegas for the 35th Anniversary Summit in October. Connecting with colleagues and long-time friends is invaluable, he says, and this event offers that on a national scale. He's looking to connect with educators from Mississippi, whose state has seen notable academic growth, to learn what's driving it and what can translate to Oklahoma’s students.

His advice for the next generation of corps members: stay connected. As he said, this network is deeply supportive and welcoming - even long after the classroom.

Attendees stayed late after last week's EduTalk, eager to continue fruitful discussions and deepening relationships.

30 alumni, community partners, and Teach For America staff met at the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits to dig into the Strong Readers Act with Melissa Ahlgrim of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, then broke into small groups to talk implementation, led by district leaders from Oklahoma City Public Schools, Harding Charter Preparatory School District, and Santa Fe South Schools to talk implementation.

What’s next? EduTalk is going monthly. Save a seat and join us on October 15th as we plan out the scope and sequence for 2027! ⬇
