From terrified, screaming, and defecating due to fear at the shelter, to just a few weeks later, Lola (now Daisy 🌼) knew she was safe, loved, and in a trusted environment the minute we left the shelter. The sad part is, she had three siblings in the kennel with her, and none of them made it out because there were no fosters available. While this is absolutely heartbreaking, Lola has a warm, safe, and loving future ahead of her.

Now, she’s heading to her forever home 🥹👏🏼❤️All it took was saying yes to fostering. Some animals simply don’t do well in the loud and scary Shelter environment and it’s completely understandable. We should not hold that against the animal and deprive them of the chance to keep living.

If you find it in your heart to open up your home for fostering you cannot only make a difference in your community, but you can save a life and you cannot put a price on that.

If you are new to fostering or on the fence about getting started, feel free to send us a message with any questions, comments, or concerns. We would love to help guide you!

There are currently only 96 animals in foster homes at Oklahoma city animal welfare as of 2/24/26. The animals are pouring through the doors, with many being turned away. There are too many animals and not enough responsible pet owners. The return to owner rates are low, people do not spay and neuter their animals which leads to over population, and many people struggle to afford to feed their dogs or pay pet deposits.

Oklahoma City, and our state in general, is facing an animal crisis— but the good news is, you can be a part of the solution by fostering an animal in need! Do you want to be a part and save a life? Questions or concerns about getting started? Send us a message!

At the shelter doors, the line to surrender pets stretches down the sidewalk. Families overwhelmed. Housing issues. Medical crises. Life happening fast and hard.

Then you look at the other doors.

Rescue groups. Networkers. Donors.

And finally… fosters.

That line is the shortest.

Not because people don’t care. But because fostering feels big. It feels intimidating. It feels like a long commitment.

But here’s what I’ve learned after years in rescue here in Kansas City…

Fostering is not about being perfect. It’s about being available.

It’s a spare bedroom.
A quiet corner.
A few weeks of your life that could completely change the rest of theirs.

When a dog or cat leaves the shelter for a foster home, something incredible happens. Their stress melts. Their personality blooms. Their adoption chances skyrocket. A kennel opens up for the next animal in need. One yes creates a ripple effect you can’t even see.

You don’t have to adopt.
You don’t have to commit forever.
You just have to say, “For now, I can help.”

And I promise you this… the return on that investment of love is outrageous. You’ll get tail wags in your kitchen. Biscuits being made on your couch. Gratitude in the form of head nudges and soft sighs.

Kansas City has always shown up for animals. We raise money. We share posts. We rally when there’s a medical emergency.

What if we also showed up with open homes?

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this might be your sign. Reach out to your local shelter/rescue and ask what they need. They will walk you through everything.

The line to surrender is long.

Let’s make the line to foster longer. 🐾❤️

If you fostered before, drop a comment and tell people what it was like. Let’s remove the fear and replace it with possibility.

A great reminder when bringing a new dog into your home. Keep them separate from your resident pets so the animal can have space to decompress and to make sure they are healthy. Doing so ensures a safer and healthy intro!

Little Miss Lola has settled in nicely to our home! She’s had adoption interest from a few people and we are 99.9% sure we’ve found her forever home— and the best news is, she will be right next-door!

Unfortunately she has come down with a case of kennel cough from the shelter environment. We will get her some meds at her vet appointment tomorrow and she’ll be good as new. She’ll be getting extra rest, water, and cuddles.

This is the perfect time to remind you if you are fostering or bringing in a dog from a shelter into your home, how important it is to keep them separate from your resident dogs for 10-14 days. It is exciting to want to introduce your cute new foster to your own pets. However, by providing a separate space for the dog, you can ensure they have a quiet place to decompress and to make sure they don’t develop any kind of respiratory sickness. This is the best way to keep everyone safe and integrate properly.
