There are currently only 96 animals in foster homes at Oklahoma city animal welfare as of 2/24/26. The animals are pouring through the doors, with many being turned away. There are too many animals and not enough responsible pet owners. The return to owner rates are low, people do not spay and neuter their animals which leads to over population, and many people struggle to afford to feed their dogs or pay pet deposits.
Oklahoma City, and our state in general, is facing an animal crisis— but the good news is, you can be a part of the solution by fostering an animal in need! Do you want to be a part and save a life? Questions or concerns about getting started? Send us a message!
At the shelter doors, the line to surrender pets stretches down the sidewalk. Families overwhelmed. Housing issues. Medical crises. Life happening fast and hard.
Then you look at the other doors.
Rescue groups. Networkers. Donors.
And finally… fosters.
That line is the shortest.
Not because people don’t care. But because fostering feels big. It feels intimidating. It feels like a long commitment.
But here’s what I’ve learned after years in rescue here in Kansas City…
Fostering is not about being perfect. It’s about being available.
It’s a spare bedroom.
A quiet corner.
A few weeks of your life that could completely change the rest of theirs.
When a dog or cat leaves the shelter for a foster home, something incredible happens. Their stress melts. Their personality blooms. Their adoption chances skyrocket. A kennel opens up for the next animal in need. One yes creates a ripple effect you can’t even see.
You don’t have to adopt.
You don’t have to commit forever.
You just have to say, “For now, I can help.”
And I promise you this… the return on that investment of love is outrageous. You’ll get tail wags in your kitchen. Biscuits being made on your couch. Gratitude in the form of head nudges and soft sighs.
Kansas City has always shown up for animals. We raise money. We share posts. We rally when there’s a medical emergency.
What if we also showed up with open homes?
If you’ve ever thought about fostering, this might be your sign. Reach out to your local shelter/rescue and ask what they need. They will walk you through everything.
The line to surrender is long.
Let’s make the line to foster longer. 🐾❤️
If you fostered before, drop a comment and tell people what it was like. Let’s remove the fear and replace it with possibility.
