Even though July is in the middle of the summer growing season, it is also the time to start thinking about fall gardening. Fall gardening here in central Oklahoma offers some of the best produce and easiest veggies of the year, plus fewer pests and decent weather. In the link to the OSU Extension Fact Sheet. HLA-6009, you can discover what kinds of things can be grown as a second warm-season crop, cool-season veggies, and extending fresh produce into winter, in addition to seed and plant selection, timing, transitioning from summer to fall crops, harvesting, and more.

Are your Iris in need of a haircut? The best practice is to cut back the leaves that are getting brown, but make sure to retain plenty of healthy, green leaves to ensure good corm (bulb) growth through this summer, and flowering next spring. Also, water occasionally when we are having hot and dry weather. Your Iris will appreciate it!

They’re Back! Gulf Fritillary butterflies have returned to our Central Oklahoma gardens. The have a similar coloring as the Monarch, but they aren’t quite as large. The are also migratory, making the trip to spend summers here in the lower Midwest, then returning to the Gulf states when the weather cools. The butterflies need nectar from flowers, but their caterpillar’s sole host plant is the passionflower vine. The caterpillars are bright orange and appear to have spikes, but are harmless. The chrysalis looks like a dried up leaf, to fool predators. Passionflower vine reseeds well, to give your yard a trellis full of vines and distinctive purple flowers all summer.

They are also available at our local farmers markets such as Nicoma Park, Choctaw, Moore, Scissortail, and Edmond, as well as a farm stand near Harrah.
