August 11, 2026 - Daily Devotional

Each week, I have the privilege of leading an incredible group of volunteers at Community Market. Most weeks, more than 40 people come together to spend a couple of hours bagging groceries, sorting produce, moving pallets, and—most importantly—welcoming our neighbors who come to the market for help.

I am continually amazed by the love these volunteers show. I rarely hear anyone complain that it's too hot (and believe me, it often is!), too cold (we've served outside in 30-degree weather), or too rainy. No matter the conditions, they show up because they know families in our community are depending on us.

Over the past year, I've seen love in action in countless ways. One volunteer walked all the way to a client's apartment to help carry groceries. Another gave a ride to someone who had taken the bus so they could get home safely. One volunteer donated a cart to someone who needed it, while another faithfully brings pet food almost every week to help families care for their beloved pets.

I've also seen love expressed in bigger ways. One longtime volunteer helped build a partnership with a local convenience store company that will provide prepared meals for our clients. Another St. Luke's family made a long-term commitment to support our pet food program, enabling us to offer pet food every single week.

Whether the act is large or small, each one is a beautiful example of what Jesus taught in Matthew 22:37–39:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Every smile, every bag of groceries, every ride, every helping hand, and every act of generosity is a reminder that loving our neighbors isn't just something Jesus told us to do—it's something we get to do. When we choose to serve others with compassion, we become living examples of God's love in our community.
