One Year Later: Derek’s Story

A year after graduating from SidexSide and stepping into a new opportunity with Our Blood Institute, Derek – referred by Firm Foundation – is still showing up early, putting in the work, and building a different future one day at a time.
Over the past year, Derek has accomplished several significant milestones: he has graduated from his sober living program, celebrated 17 months of sobriety, gained the trust of his leadership team, and is currently being considered for a coordinator/supervisor position at work. Throughout this journey, he has remained engaged with the SidexSide family, offering encouragement to others and reinforcing the importance of long-term support, even taking on a role in our Alumni Council.

This year has not been easy. In November, Derek lost his mother. In the middle of grief and uncertainty, he decided to keep moving forward.

“One thing I just keep doing is putting one foot in front of the other and choosing not to ‘pick back up’ today.”

That mindset has carried him through some incredibly difficult moments and into real stability. He recently shared that SidexSide gave him more than job training. It gave him people who felt like family, people who encouraged him and believed in him when he wasn’t sure he believed in himself.

At SidexSide, we often talk about employment as a bridge to stability, but Derek’s story is a reminder that retention, consistency, community, and hope matter just as much as placement.

We are incredibly proud of Derek and grateful to employer partners like Our Blood Institute who continue to create opportunities for people to rebuild their lives and grow long after graduation.

This group didn’t get here alone.

Referral partners, employers, and a whole lot of hard work made this possible.

Talent is everywhere. Access is not.

Proud to create spaces where both can meet.

A big 'thank you' to all of the employers that attended, and if you're an employer looking for reliable, motivated talent and a partner who helps reduce the risk on your end, we’d love to connect.

At SidexSide, our participants aren’t just “going through a program.” They’re building stability, gaining skills, and stepping into jobs that move their lives forward.

Every cohort is a reminder that talent is everywhere.

Access isn’t.

Thanks to our referral partners, employers, and supporters who help make this bridge possible.

If you’re an employer ready to hire differently, we should talk.

Inasmuch grantee SidexSide OKC is an Oklahoma City nonprofit reimagining workforce development through an earn-and-learn model for individuals overcoming barriers like justice involvement, homelessness, and poverty. Through a Pay for Success partnership with the Oklahoma Impact Investing Collaborative and Oklahoma Human Services, SidexSide leverages philanthropic capital to fund training upfront, with public dollars reimbursed only when measurable outcomes are achieved.

As a result of this program...
🎉 92% of graduates secured employment
🎉 89% of graduates remained employed after one year
🎉 There was a 285% increase in participant earnings
🎉 There was a 32% decrease in reliance on federal and state benefit programs

This innovative approach reflects what’s possible when cross-sector partners align around results-driven solutions that strengthen Oklahoma’s workforce and create meaningful pathways to economic mobility.

Thank you to Leadership Oklahoma for inviting us to participate in this panel on public-private partnerships, and specifically to highlight Pay for Success financing and our amazing investee, SidexSide OKC! "We invest in outcomes, not organizations," said Ed Long, our Collaborative president. "We invest in the people served who are doing the hard work and achieving the results."

This is what the work actually looks like.
Not highlight reels. Not slogans. Real people, real progress, real stability being built over time.

At SidexSide, we exist to build a bridge between overlooked talent and employers who are willing to show up differently. This video captures why that matters and what’s possible when support doesn’t stop at the hire.

Watch. Share. Partner with us.
Because stability isn’t accidental. It’s built.

Real growth looks like this.

A couple weeks ago, Kayshon stopped by the office absolutely glowing. She just hit 90 days at her new job and rolled up ready to show us her brand-new car. Not subtle. Very earned.

Kayshon came to SidexSide through Restore OKC, carrying resilience shaped by recovery, family trauma, and a serious desire to grow. While in the program, she leaned hard into communication, self-awareness, and learning how to move through the workplace with intention.

Since graduating? She’s now employed with M-D Building Products, and has been stacking wins: benefits, a car, supporting her daughter through college, and continued professional growth. When a temporary injury took her out of work, their HR director made sure she had paid leave and the medical care she needed to recover and get back to what she loves. That’s what supportive employment actually looks like.

Her takeaway says it all: protect your stability, stay focused, skip the drama. This season matters too much.

This is what happens when referral partners, employers, and workforce programs actually show up together.
