I bet you've noticed it's a literal 100+ outside, and the nights only cool down to 80. The heat is overwhelming and our unhoused friends are tired, sick, and downright surly. Emotions are high, patience is thin, the stress is real. Thanks to Crossings Community Church that donated hot dogs and buns, we served 40 neighbors tonight. Chili dogs, oranges, brownies, and gallons and gallons of lemonade is a brief respite in the air conditioning with clean bathrooms and warm smiles. Ray first came to the Center a few months ago on a weeknight. At least 50 years old and pretty tall, Ray's skin is leathery from years in the sun. He was wearing jeans, a faded white t-shirt, and a ballcap over scraggly, long reddish hair that fell towards his face. He had eaten his meal and was walking down the hall looking around when I walked out of the laundry room.

What I Am
Am I an island in the stream
Around which passes all the world
Or perhaps am I a dream
Imagination all awhirl

Am I worth a second glance
Or just the one as time moves on
Am I a dream of yours perchance
An idea fancy passing on

Am I a stone among the fields

In OKC, something like 30% of unhoused individuals have a job. Among our friends at the Micah Center there are Curbside Chronicle sellers, event set-up staff at the PayCom Center, Sonic employees, furniture builders, hospital maintenance, contract labor, and thanks to a multi-agency partnership, future fork lift drivers. Everywhere you go 'success' is a thing: are you successful, is your business a success, how do you measure success, you have to communicate your success. Proving success is vital for a nonprofit organization. At Micah we often state how we measure success because we have a slightly unique definition of success. When I read Webster, it seems to me that 'effective' is a better word for us to use than 'success.' Success: favorable or desired outcome, Effective: producing a desired effect. Success could be feeding x number of clients, distributing x number of shoes, raising x number of dollars. And of course, those are all part of what we do and measuring them is important. Those metrics demonstrate the work we do and the responsible and efficient way we operate. But beyond that, our definition of success is actually about effectiveness, about impact. What desired effect do we want? Our goal at Micah is for people to feel loved, valued, dignified, encouraged, supported. That can be through a pair of shoes and a meal. It is also, and we suggest more importantly, through time spent getting to know people as individuals. Their histories, struggles, and joys; their favorite coffee cup, what movie they want to watch, how they feel about ranch dressing. It's harder to measure, harder to 'prove.' So, I offer you these unsolicited reviews and hope you will consider them proof that we are being sucessful/effective.

Have you ever seen someone with an injury so bad you felt a little sick and thought, how can he possibly manage that pain? That's how I felt when I saw Howard last night at the Micah Center. He had large severe blisters, open and infected, on the back of one of his heels. I know you don't want to see it on Facebook, and it felt intrusive to ask for a photo in his condition. He and his partner, Gracie, haven't been to the Center in a while, but they came hoping we could help. Howard had gone to the hospital, and they give him one pain pill and sent him back out. I have no specific medical training, but clearly that was not sufficient. I put burn cream on it, wrapped it gently in gauze, gave him a clean pair of crew socks to cover it, and a better pair of shoes. Most importantly, I referred them to Healing Hands. Healing Hands is a clinic specifically for the unhoused and is part of the Community Health Centers system. They treat people with respect and dignity, providing walk-in emergency care and primary care service. We have referred so many individuals to Dr Samant and PA Mathew and have always heard good things. Howard and Gracie were so grateful for what little we could do, and for the referral to a clinic that would take his need seriously. This is what our neighbors confront every day, and this is what success looks like for the Micah Center: filling the gaps and providing resource navigation to those that need it the most.

Today's Sunday - know what that means? It means that at the Micah Center we will be busy! We'll serve 40-50 of our unhoused neighbors taco salad provided by Messiah Lutheran Church, and have our weekly brownie delivery from Eric. About 12 people will have showers, and we'll do probably as many loads of laundry - some of them in the new washing machine provided by Mayflower Congregational Church just last week. If it's a typical Sunday, our doggo friends Bingo, Cocoa, Tinkerbutt, and Baby Girl will be there. We'll give out socks and shoes, and because our friend Lisa sent us a box from Amazon, we have new underwear too. Mike will watch Mission Impossible in the Lounge because Jenn picked it up from the Library for him, and if someone smarter than me can work the TV, we'll watch the final game of the World Cup. Also, we will talk about life; the pains and the joys: interviews and doctors appointments, waiting for disability benefits, selling Curbside magazines, successfully fixing a broken bike, anticipating a birthday. Because we're all just people, neighbors, friends spending an afternoon hanging out. You should join us!

As a young organization we have been welcomed, encouraged, and supported by the other homelessness service agencies in OKC's Key to Home network. Our experience has been that everyone works together for the benefit of the unhoused in our community. The Micah Center is an extension of the network into an underserved area, and developed over six months of strategy discussions with other agencies, directors, and service leaders. One of my most important mentors has been Jamie Zumwalt of Joe's Addiction. Last night Jamie did an amazing job speaking to our volunteer staff at a training and celebration dinner. Her wisdom, experience, and spirit are invaluable and we say thank you to her!
