Joe's Addiction Joe's Addiction is a Coffee House Community

Joe's Addiction serves up a crazy good cup of coffee in an atmosphere that has been called a pleasantly quirky blend of Moroccan cafe and grandma’s living room. From specialty lattes to frozen mudslides, our own blend of Masala Chai to a good ‘ole cup of Joe, the drinks are all “crazy good.”

More than just a coffee shop, Joe’s is also a Community. We call it a Community of Hope—people from various backgrounds who “hang out” and do life together. You’ll find folks unwinding with a good book, working on their laptop, visiting with one another, or playing a friendly game of Skipbo. Community events and services happen all through the week, from Food Pantry to a Weekend Free Store, to NA meetings, and even church on Sundays. Friday nights are crazy fun with sober karaoke, free bingo, and live music. To paraphrase Dorothy Day, we have found it’s easier to be good when you’re hanging out with a bunch of other people who are trying to be good. So whether you want to zoom in and grab your favorite drink to go, sit in a corner and relax, or join in a rousing game of cards, ALL are welcome.

Y’all. Something pretty incredible has happened.

First, we need to say thank you.

Since we shared last week about the financial place Joe’s is in, so many of you have responded. We have received gifts of $10, $20, $50, $100 and more. You have shared our post, sent encouraging messages, asked what we need, and reminded us once again just how many people care about this little community.

Those gifts matter. Every single one of them. They buy groceries. They pay electric bills. They put gas in the truck. They help us keep opening the doors every morning and saying yes when someone needs something to eat.

And now, something pretty incredible has happened.

A very generous donor has committed $20,000 to Joe’s Addiction—and has challenged the rest of our community to match it.

Can we turn $20,000 into $40,000?

We still have a significant financial hole to fill, but this gives us an incredible opportunity to make a really big dent in it.

We need to raise another $20,000.

Maybe your part is $10. Maybe it’s $50 or $100. Maybe someone reading this has the ability to give $1,000 or $5,000. Whatever your part is, it moves us closer.

A man came through our front door recently and stood looking around the room.
I could tell he was new, but I didn’t know whether he had come in to buy a delicious coffee drink or because he needed something from us.

“Good morning. What can we do for you this morning?”

“Someone told me I might be able to get something to eat here.”

“Yes! You sure can.”

We are having this conversation multiple times a day lately.

People are hungry.

Groceries cost more. Some people have lost access to food assistance. Others are working and still can’t make their paycheck stretch far enough. And some, like Manny, have fallen into the gaps of systems that were supposed to catch them.

Manny is 24 years old and has significant challenges managing everyday life on his own. When he turned 18, he was sent out to figure life out for himself.

He has tried.

He has attended job training. He has practiced interviewing. He has applied for jobs. But employers quickly recognize that Manny struggles to do the work in the way they need it done.

He applied for disability and was denied. With help, he appealed. As part of that process, an IQ test was administered. In the evaluation, Manny scored just two points above the threshold they were looking for.

Two points.

And now Manny doesn’t have enough food.

Stories like his are walking through our front door every day.

At the same time, Joe’s is in one of the tightest financial places we have been in for a long time.

So far this year, $45,000 in gifts pledged to Joe's have not come in. Some donors have been unable to give what they originally committed, while others have only been able to give a portion. That is a significant hole in the budget of a small organization like ours.

On top of that, we’ve had expenses we couldn’t have anticipated.

This week, we wrote a $3,500 check to repair the truck we use to pick up food donations—and I found myself wondering how we were going to cover the rest of our bills.

The truck had already been out of service for two months, which meant we not only had the repair bill, but also lost food donations we couldn’t pick up.

And after 39 days over 100 degrees in Oklahoma City this summer, you can imagine what it has cost to keep a building full of people cool and safe.

Everything costs more.

And more people need us.

Those two realities are colliding right now.

We need help.

If you have been thinking about giving to Joe’s Addiction, this is the time. If you already give and are able to make an extra gift, we need it. And if $10 or $20 is what you can do, please know that those gifts matter too.

The plate in this picture is a real meal served at Joe’s. This is what your gift does. It puts a plate of food in front of someone who doesn’t have enough. It keeps the building cool when it’s 100 degrees outside. It keeps our truck on the road so we can pick up donated food. And it keeps our doors open so that when someone like Manny walks in, we can still say:

“Yes. You sure can.”

💛 September’s T-Shirt of the Month is all about what Joe’s is meant to be: a happy place.

Joe’s exists to create a welcoming community where people can find dignity, connection, and a place to simply be themselves. More than one of our patrons has told us, “Joe’s is my happy place.” Those words inspired this month’s design. 🌼

When you wear the tee, you’re not just wearing a shirt—you’re helping fuel the mission. Every shirt helps provide meals, laundry, showers, coffee, and community. 1 shirt = 30 people fed.

It took us almost 20 years to find the words.

This spring, our Board of Directors gathered for a strategic planning session. Part of our work that day was taking another look at the mission statement we wrote ten years ago:

“We are an intentional community of dreamers and instigators focused on seeing Love, Justice, Hope, Pleasure and Beauty becoming a reality for the economically poor and marginalized. We do this arm in arm with likeminded individuals from all walks and faiths. We are passionate alchemists for change.”

Those words have served us well. But after 19 years of life together at Joe’s, we know some things now that we didn't know when those words were written.

We know that community isn't something we create for people. We create it with each other.

We know that dignity matters. That joy matters. That belonging matters.
And we have learned that nonviolence is more than the absence of violence. It is something we practice together. It is how we learn to live in community with people whose lives, stories, struggles and experiences may be very different from our own.
So we found some new words:

“We co-create a nonviolent community by cultivating dignity, joy, and belonging with people challenged by poverty, hunger, or homelessness.”

Our mission didn't change.

We just found better words for what 19 years of loving, learning, arguing, laughing, grieving, eating, drinking coffee, screwing up, forgiving, and belonging to each other has taught us.

Next year, Joe’s Addiction turns 20.

There is a story from Africa about a group of children and a basket of strawberries.

An anthropologist placed the basket beneath a tree and told the children, "The first one to reach it gets all of the strawberries."

When he said, "Go!" the children didn't race against each other. Instead, they joined hands, walked together to the tree, and shared the fruit.

When asked why they had done that, one child simply replied:

"Ubuntu. How can one of us be happy if all the others are sad?"

Ubuntu is often described as "I am because we are."

That simple idea is at the heart of everything we do at Joe's.

Every day, we gather around tables with neighbors from every walk of life. We share meals, wash clothes, offer showers, pour coffee, listen to stories, celebrate victories, and carry burdens together. We believe that dignity isn't something to be earned—it's something every person deserves.

Our community teaches us that none of us truly thrive when our neighbors are struggling. We can't simply focus on "me" while someone beside us is hungry, isolated, or without hope. Our lives are deeply connected.

When one person finds belonging, we all become stronger.�
When someone receives a hot meal, a clean shirt, or simply a reminder that they matter, our entire community is better for it.�
When we choose compassion over indifference, we all flourish.

This is Ubuntu.

This is why we chose this month's shirt design.
The words "I Am Because We Are" are more than a slogan—they're a reminder that we belong to one another. Every shirt purchased helps us continue creating a place where everyone is welcomed, everyone is valued, and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

When you wear this shirt, you're not just wearing a design. You're helping provide meals, showers, laundry, coffee, and community for neighbors who need it most. It's a small way to live out the belief that when we care for one another, we all flourish.

**When the temperatures rise, choosing kindness gets a little harder.**

The Oklahoma heat has a way of testing all of us. Tempers get shorter. Patience runs thinner. The stress of daily life feels a little heavier under the summer sun.

At Joe’s, our days are often full—serving meals, coordinating the vet clinic, helping guests access the shower truck, and responding to the countless needs that walk through our doors. While those services are essential, we also know that people need more than resources. They need moments to simply *be human*.

This week, our amazing intern created one of those moments.

She gathered paints, brushes, and a handful of rocks and invited our community to slow down for a little while. No agenda. No expectations. Just an opportunity to sit together, create, laugh, and focus on something beautiful.

As paint covered rocks and conversations flowed around the picnic table, something special happened. For a brief moment, the heat, the stress, and the challenges of the day faded into the background. People connected. They encouraged one another. They expressed themselves through art. They practiced mindfulness without even realizing it.

The finished rocks are wonderful, but the real masterpiece was the time spent together.

These small moments matter. They remind us that healing isn’t always found in the big things. Sometimes it’s found in a paintbrush, a shared table, and the simple act of creating alongside someone else.

At Joe’s, we’re always working to meet practical needs—but we’re equally committed to nurturing the hearts and minds of the people we serve.

Because everyone deserves a place to belong, create, and be seen.💜💕🥰
