Meet our festival Young Artist Spotlight pianist Alexander Burrow, who will open our final festival concert on Saturday, 6/20 at 4:00 pm with Liszt's Transcendental Etude No. 4 "Mazeppa" and one of his original compositions.
About Alexander Burrow:
Alexander Burrow is an 18-year-old senior of Huron Highschool in Ann Arbor, MI. He was introduced to music at an early age, joining the Boychoir of Ann Arbor at age 7. Alexander played the violin and clarinet in middle school and began serious piano studies at the age of 14. Since then, he has earned numerous honors, including winner of the 2026 MFMC High School Piano Award, 1st Prize at the 2026 Rosalie Edwards Youth Competition in Ann Arbor, 1st Prize at the 2026 Dorothy MacKenzie Price Competition in Toledo (OH), and 2nd Prize at the 2026 Sherer Piano Competition in Goshen (IN). He won the 2nd prize in the 2026 and the 3rd Prize in the 2025 Steinway Jr. Artist Competition, and Honorable Mention for the 2026 and 2nd prize for the 2025 Tuesday Musicale of Detroit Student League Competition. He is also a recipient of the 2025 and 2026 Tuesday Musicale of Detroit Harry and Irene Elkins Helping Hand Fund scholarship. He was awarded 1st place at the Schoolcraft Honors Recital audition in November 2024, as well as 1st place for the 2025 Ravel 150th Festival Piano Competition (pre-collegiate) in Michigan. In addition, he was a finalist at the 2025 Dearborn Symphony Young Artist Competition and Dexter Community Orchestra Youth Artist Competition.
In March 2026, Alexander made his New York City debut at the Ukrainian Institute of America. He was named a Finalist for From the Top’s Learning and Media Lab Fellowship program and was invited to be featured on the Daily Joy series in fall 2025. In January of 2026, Alexander was awarded 2nd prize (senior high school division) in the Los Angeles Youth Philharmonic (LAYP) Piano Concerto Competition and will make his concerto debut at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in July. His upcoming performances include a series of concerts in the UP, organized by Beacon Arts Michigan; chamber music at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie in December; and a solo recital on the Dorothy MacKenzie Price series in the fall.
In Summer 2025, Alexander participated in the Southeastern Piano Festival Piano Institute and Anchorage Chamber Music Intensive. He also received a scholarship to attend the 2025 BGSU Piano Camp. In Summer 2026, he will compete in the Arthur Fraser Piano Competition at the Southeastern Piano Festival.
Alexander has performed at the National Republic Ballroom in Columbia (SC), Steinway Piano Gallery in Detroit (MI), Cranbrook House and Garden in Bloomfield Hills (MI), Schoolcraft College in Livonia (MI), Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor (MI), Britton Recital Hall at the University of Michigan, and All Seasons Ann Arbor Senior Living Community (MI). He has given solo recitals for the residents at Covenant Living Center in Tulsa (OK). Alexander has studied with Dr. Philip Solomonik and John Solari, in addition to receiving lessons from David Fung, Philip Bush (SEPF), and Jinzhao Xu. He is currently studying with Christopher Harding, professor of piano at the University of Michigan. In fall 2026, Alexander will attend the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance as a freshman, majoring in piano performance.
In addition to classical music, Alexander enjoys music production and has released several original pop instrumental soundtracks. Alexander is also interested in Taekwondo and recently earned his second-degree black belt. Alexander enjoys studying Chemistry and Mandarin at school, and spending time with friends. He is a member of the National Honor Society at Huron High School and the Tuesday Musicale of Detroit Student League. He is also the founder and creator of “pianoworlddaily,” an online media platform aiming to spread the joy of piano music to listeners.
