Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! Today, we honor the rich history, enduring traditions and lasting contributions of Indigenous peoples across Oklahoma and beyond.

As the home of the Jim Thorpe Museum, we proudly celebrate the legacy of Jim Thorpe, a member of the Sac and Fox Nation whose remarkable achievements broke barriers, inspired generations and forever changed the world of sports.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Oklahoma’s tribes for their continued contributions to our state, helping move Oklahoma forward while preserving the rich histories, cultures and traditions that have shaped our past and continue to inspire our future.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience and extraordinary impact of Native American communities, athletes and leaders. Past, present and future.

For decades, the world has known Jim Thorpe through record books, Olympic history and the stories told about one of the greatest athletes of all time. Now, we have the opportunity to hear his story in his own words.

KWTV - NEWS 9 recently visited the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Museum to speak with Jim Thorpe’s granddaughter, Anita Thorpe, and our museum curator, Justin Lenhart, about the discovery of Thorpe’s unpublished autobiography manuscript — a story that had been waiting 70 years to be told.

The remarkable discovery offers a rare, personal look at Jim Thorpe beyond the medals and accolades, even bringing his own voice back to life through never-before-heard audio from the original interview.

We’re proud to help preserve Jim Thorpe’s legacy here in his home state and look forward to sharing even more of his story through a new exhibit ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games.
