Luschen, Little Flower pastor and one of the VOICE-OKC founders, said he was pleased that his church was able to offer immigrants a safe space to share their personal stories. “To be able to tell their stories in their church — their joys, their sorrows — that is what a church community should be about," he said. "It we can't do that, we have to ask what kind of church are we."

Last week Rev. Dr. Kent Doss, Minister at First Unitarian Church, represented VOICE Clergy and Institutions, standing with the JFK Neighborhood Association at the Board of Adjustments meeting. The Board voted in favor of the interests of the neighborhood, denying the appeal of Derichebourg Recycling with a vote of 3-1.

The Rev. Lori Walke, senior pastor of Mayflower Congregational Church-UCC, said the letter-writing campaign helped show how important the issue of immigration is to many Oklahomans and religious leaders. The group of leaders that met with the governor represented a variety of Christian denominations, including Roman Catholic, United Church of Christ, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Southern Baptist.

On Friday, we celebrated the VOICE Annual Gala with a Trivia twist. The Lifetime Civic Engagement Award was given to VOICE’s own Dick and Linda Clark from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, while the Powerful VOICE Award went to Attorney Ed Wunch and Paralegal Stephanie Lee-Huff from Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma for their work in Fines and Fees with the previously incarcerated. Dick’s Rockin’ Trivia Team took home the gold in Trivia, showing outstanding knowledge of VOICE history, Oklahoma History, and Civics. A huge thanks to our very own Government Teacher, Aaron Baker from Joy Mennonite, who alongside founding organizer Kris King, came up with questions for trivia night.
