This is Michelle, the Executive Director of Forever Yours Dog Rescue. I have dreaded making this post, it has made me physically ill while typing it. I've hardly slept or ate over the last few days, knowing this day was coming.
I've been doing dog (and a few cats) rescue for over 40 years. I started Forever Yours in November of 2011 to help dogs who might not otherwise be rescued. Dogs from small shelters across Oklahoma, dogs on the streets, dogs with medical issues, senior dogs, we rescued dogs of all breeds, if a dog was in need and we had the funding, we would help.
Back when I started, it was relatively easy to find foster homes, people were more willing to open their homes to these dogs in need, for some reason. Now it is almost impossible to find foster homes, especially for bigger dogs, and almost impossible to find fosters for dogs that need to be only dogs.
We have always taken our dogs back if the adopters could no longer take care of them. Most of these dogs were adopted as puppies, then returned as adults, the majority of them needing to be only dogs in the home. They are not outwardly aggressive to other dogs, they just can't live with other dogs, or maybe need a home with one other dog of a certain temperament.
For almost 15 years, we have been supported by donations, grants, and our adoption fees. Grants, adoptions and donations are rare these days, while costs have continued to rise (vetting, medicines, boarding). I hate asking for money, but we need help!
When we can't find foster homes for the dogs being returned, we have had no choice but to put them in boarding while they wait for their forever homes. We have had local doggie daycares work with us on costs, so they at least get to be in a daycare setting, where they get out several times a day to play and get social interactions. Many of these dogs come to every adoption event and we have tried repeatedly to find foster homes for them, to no avail.
Because of a generous donation, we have been able to cover these boarding costs for the last 3 months. But the truth is, we are only funded through this month only. At the end of September, unless we get donations, our rescue is no longer funded. The dogs we have in boarding will have no place to go, we will have failed them.
PLEASE consider making a donation so we can continue to help other dogs and cover the costs of taking care of these dogs who were returned, many through no fault of their own. They are counting on us, and it is killing me that we are struggling to care for them. And if you can foster one, that would be awesome!
