OKLAHOMA HORSE RACING HALL OF FAMER C.R. TROUT WORKS MULTIPLE STAKES WINNER LETTA’S LEGACY AT RE*****ON Re*****on Park

OKLAHOMA CITY – Owner-trainer-breeder C.R. Trout sent out multiple-stakes winner Letta’s Legacy for her first official workout of the Re*****on Park preseason on the final day of July. The talented sprinter is prepping for the upcoming meet.



Trout’s “Queen” of the barn has won six of her last seven starts and was a stakes winner at Re*****on Park last fall, winning the $99,600 Oklahoma Classics Distaff Sprint Handicap by a head on Oct. 17, 2025. Jockey David Cabrera, her regular rider, was aboard for that victory.



“Oh, yeah,” said Trout. “He loves her; he even wants to work her in the morning,” Trout said of Cabrera. Letta’s Legacy worked this past Friday, covering a half-mile in :48.80, handily over a fast track.



The 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare’s record coming into this meet is 22 starts, 12 wins, six seconds and one third for earnings of $418,383. Half of those trips to the winner’s circle have been in stakes races. Letta’s Legacy did get votes for Horse of the Meeting during the 2025 Re*****on Park season, after beating Miss Code West twice in allowance sprints. Despite the wins, Miss Code West was voted her third consecutive Horse of the Meeting honor.



“I was disappointed we didn’t get Horse of the Meet,” said the 81-year-old trainer from Edmond, Okla. “My whole family was, too. I thought we deserved it. It’s like they said, ‘Miss Code West won three stakes and we only won one.’ We might try something different this year. Miss Code West is a nice filly and I’m glad they won it if we didn’t.”



The only race she lost in her last seven is when she ran fourth at Lone Star Park in the Memorial Day Sprint Stakes there.



“I really shouldn’t have run her there,” Trout said. “The track was hard. The winner went in 1:08 and 4/5ths in that race. They shipped in from everywhere. You might see that winner (Thermal) in the Breeders’ Cup.



Thermal is a 5-year-old Ontario-bred mare, trained by John Sadler and was ridden to an 8-1/4 length victory in the Memorial Day Sprint Stakes on May 25 with jockey Luis Saez up. The winner had shipped from Santa Anita on the West Coast to run in that $100,000 race. Letta’s Legacy was more than double digits back in fourth.



The great thing for Trout, he said, was that she came out of that race in tip-top shape and has never really had a blemish on her chart of physicality.



“She is a Godsend,” he said. “She may be so sound because my (late) wife (Arletta) is watching out for her. She broke bad in Dallas and we spotted them eight to 10 lengths at the start.”



Letta’s Legacy was named as a tribute to the late Arletta Trout.



Since Letta’s Legacy won three races in a row to finish the Re*****on Park meet last year, the last one in allowance company on Dec. 17, the mare has continued her winning ways. Trout gave her some time off and she came back with two stakes victories at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., and one at Fair Meadows in Tulsa.

Tuesday, Aug. 4

Sky Rocker – A 6-year-old Texas-bred mare by Sky Kingdom, out of the Special Rate mare Special Rockstar is trained by Mindy Willis and owned and bred by Star Bright Thoroughbreds. The mare worked Tuesday and got the bullet for four furlongs in :47.61, handily. She is a multiple stakes winner at Lone Star Park, taking the Lane’s End Danny Shifflet Scholarship Stakes in back-to-back years at Grand Prairie, Texas. The last win in that race came on June 13 of this year as she won by a full length at 7-1/2 furlongs on the turf. Record: 25 starts, 8 wins, 2 seconds, 3 thirds for earnings of $296,064.



Monday, Aug. 3

Mo For Us – This 5-year-old Louisiana-bred mare, conditioned by Steve Asmussen, a 20-time leading trainer at Re*****on Park, went a half-mile in :50.26, handily. She is a stakes winner in the Rosewater Stakes at Delta Downs on Dec. 23, 2025 for owners Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt and Jackpot Farm. She was bred by Adcock’s Red River Farm and Joe Adcock. The mare is by Mo Tom, from the Graeme Hall mare Bovell Road. Record: 19 starts, 6 wins, 4 seconds, 5 thirds for earnings of $326,075.



Sunday, Aug. 2

Optimist Cowgirl – This 7-year-old Texas-bred mare by Optimizer, out of the Dynameaux mare Dynamic Cowgirl, comes from the barn of owner-trainer Eduardo Cruz. The mare was bred by Richard A. Mays, DVM. She won the Fiesta Mile Stakes at Lone Star Park on July 5, 2025 and the Miss Bluebonnet Turf Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston on Feb. 15, 2025. Her record at Re*****on Park is 7 starts, 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third for earnings of $42,047 with the victory coming against allowance horses on the turf in September 2022. She worked the bullet at a half-mile in :48.94, handily. Her career record: 29 starts, 6 wins, 5 seconds, 8 thirds for earnings of $277,051.



Among the other stakes winners that hit the track for workouts over the weekend were Miss Code West, Won Happy Mama, Connors Outlaw, Country Caper, Excaping the Blues, High Front, Dimatic, Ritzaphena, Sawasdee and Saline River.



The 2026 Re*****on Park Thoroughbred Season begins Friday, Aug. 21 and continues to Saturday, Dec. 19.

THREE-TIME HORSE OF MEETING, MISS CODE WEST, BEGINS HER HUNT FOR HISTORY, PREPPING FOR RE*****ON PARK SEASON

OKLAHOMA CITY – When Miss Code West races this fall at Re*****on Park, she will be trying to make history, doing something no other horse has ever done at this Oklahoma City track. She will be going for her fourth Horse of the Meeting title.



When Miss Code West won the award last year for the third year in a row, she tied the Oklahoma legend, Welder, for the most Horse of the Meeting trophies here. Welder, who won more races than any horse at Re*****on Park with 16, was owned by (the late Clayton Rash) Ra-Max Farms and was trained by Teri Luneack. He won his Horse of the Meeting trophies from 2018-2020. Miss Code West currently has 10 victories at Re*****on Park, nine of those in black-type company, two behind Welder’s local record of 11 total, all won consecutively. Miss Code West has won five stakes races in a row. She ran second in the $200,000 Re*****on Park Oaks on Sept. 29, 2024.



“I think there was a lot more pressure last year, trying to tie Welder’s record (of three Horse of the Meet trophies) than trying to break it this year,” said Miss Code West’s trainer Kevin Scholl. “But we’re definitely excited about going for it.”



The 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare by Code West, out of the Kipling mare Inca Miss, is owned by Jeffry and Julie Puryear of Denton, Texas, and was bred in Oklahoma by Bryan Hawk. Scholl, a former jockey, is Miss Code West’s exercise and workout rider and he sent her to the track for the first time this summer on Saturday, July 25. The multiple stakes winner worked a half-mile in :49.38 seconds, handily, as she began her preparation for the upcoming meet. The 2026 Re*****on Park Thoroughbred Season begins Friday, Aug. 21 and continues to Saturday, Dec. 19.



“She did really well (in the workout),” Scholl said. “She loves to run and she loves Re*****on Park.”



How does he know that?



“Oh, she knows she’s here,” he said. “When she got off the van (from the farm in Texas), she looked straight over to the grandstand.”



If her 2026 efforts at Re*****on Park are anything like the meet she had last year, Miss Code West with jockey Floyd Wethey, Jr., in the saddle should be a stellar one. She comes into this meet the same way she did last year, with only one race under her belt since she left here last December. In 2025 at Re*****on Park, she won three stakes races – the Bob Barry Memorial, the Oklahoma Classics Distaff Turf and the She’s All In Handicap - and picked up two seconds in her five starts here. There aren’t a lot of stakes races that fit the conditions of this mare where Scholl and the Puryears want to race, so she enjoys a lot of time off after Re*****on Park’s annual meet.



After the 2024 season at Re*****on Park, Scholl laid her up from Dec. 13, 2024 to June 28, 2025. That is when he ran her in the Chicken Fried Stakes at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, on the turf at five furlongs, where she won by a half-length. He didn’t send her out again until an allowance race at Re*****on Park on Aug. 16, 2025. When her campaign was over in 2025 in Oklahoma City, she was laid off again from Dec. 20, 2025 to June 27 this summer when she once again won the Chicken Fried Stakes, again by a half-length.



“That was the game plan all along,” Scholl said. “We turned her out again and she felt good (after the rest) when she won the Chicken Fried Stakes again. I think she prefers the turf, but she can run on either-or. I think we will start her out in that grass stakes on Sept. 11 at 7-1/2 furlongs (the Shawn Bergquist Memorial Stakes, formerly the Bob Barry Memorial, won by Miss Code West last year). We are looking at running her in three stakes here.”



In her career, Miss Code West’s record is 19 starts, 14 wins and three seconds for $687,652 earned. She was purchased in the Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale in 2022 for $12,000.



Until last year, she had only lost once at Re*****on Park and that was to Alpine Princess in the open company Oaks. In 2025, she lost twice to Letta’s Legacy, who runs out of the barn of Oklahoma Horse Racing Hall of Fame owner-trainer-breeder C.R. Trout. Scholl said he wasn’t surprised Miss Code West won her third Horse of the Meeting last year despite losing to Trout’s mare twice.



“Not really surprised,” he said. “More grateful. Our horse won three stakes races and theirs only won one.”



Letta’s Legacy has made quite a name for herself as well, being a multiple stakes winner who has compiled a record of 22-12-6-1 with $418,383 in earnings. This 5-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare has won six of her last seven starts, four of them stakes victories. Her only loss in that sequence was a fourth-place finish in the Memorial Day Sprint Stakes at Lone Star Park on May 25 this year. MULTIPLE STAKES WINNER, WON HAPPY MAMA, PUTS IN WORKOUT FOR TRAINER TRAVIS MURPHY

OKLAHOMA CITY – Trainer Travis Murphy, of Jones, Okla., sent out multiple-stakes winner Won Happy Mama for a workout Friday morning over the Re*****on Park track.



Won Happy Mama, a 5-year-old Iowa-bred mare by Runhappy, out of the Elusive Quality mare Vicarious Won, tried three furlongs in a time of :36.57 seconds over a fast track. Friday training took place under cloudy skies with temperatures in the high 70s.



Won Happy Mama, winner of the Mamie Eisenhower Stakes and the Saylorville Stakes at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa in 2025, has never officially raced at Re*****on Park. She has built an excellent resume for Murphy and his co-owners with the mare – Matt Trent and Poindexter Thoroughbreds.



Won Happy Mama has been out 16 times in her career, winning six times, running second twice and third once for earnings of $336,927. The mare’s last out was in the Grade 2, $400,000 Franklin Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 12 last fall. She finished sixth in that difficult spot. She had won the two stakes at Prairie Meadows – the Eisenhower by 1-1/4 lengths at six furlongs on the dirt as the 5-2 second favorite on June 20,2025, and the Saylorville by three-quarters of a length on July 4, 2025, at 7-1 odds, also at six furlongs. Jockey Elvin Gonzalez was aboard for both victories in Iowa.

NEDRA NELL and CRAZY GRACIE - GET SHORT BULLET TIMES IN FIRST RE*****ON PARK OFFICIAL WORKS OF PRESEASON

OKLAHOMA CITY – Thoroughbred horses took to the racetrack for the first official workouts at Re*****on Park for this upcoming meet on Thursday morning. A couple of 2-year-olds trained by Pat Swan recorded the first bullet works of the preseason.

Nedra Nell and Crazy Gracie worked in tandem and were both clocked in :37.14 seconds for three furlongs, breaking from the gate, for the top time of the seven horses that tried the distance.

“We sent the two out with exercise riders; doesn’t seem like many jockeys are here right now,” said Swan, 74, who makes his home on a 160-acre ranch in Jones, Okla. “The times were a little slow, it wasn’t about the times. We just wanted them to learn the gate and get their gate cards. We accomplished that so we are happy.”

Nedra Nell is by Mo Town, out of the Proud Citizen mare Tranquility Dream, who was in foal to Mo Town with this filly when Swan said they bought her. Crazy Gracie, who was bred by Swan, is by Mister Lucky Cat, out of the Lucky Lionel mare Oh My Goodness. Both will be first-time starters when they debut this fall.

Horses were on the track Wednesday morning but none posted an official workout. The 2026 Re*****on Park Thoroughbred Season begins Friday, Aug. 21 and continues to Saturday, Dec. 19.

At 74 years of age, Swan doesn’t even think of the possibility of retiring.

“Oh, when you have a yearling in the pasture, you’re thinking he’s probably the best you’ve ever had,” said Swan, with a laugh. “I have too much to do to retire. This ranch is a full-time job; we have 30 cows out here and I bought 10 broodmares.”

Swan said among those returning with his stable for the meet this year is How About Bob, a 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelding by Mister Lucky Cat, out of the Beau Genius mare Serene Serena. How About Bob has started 11 times in his career, winning three and earning $103,870. His most recent win came in the $50,000 Golden Circle Stakes at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, on May 16, going six furlongs in 1:09.52. He won under up-and-coming jockey Ronnie Huckaby, as the 7-2 third choice in the race. He beat the 9-5 favorite, Canned Heat, by a half-length.

“He’s a nice gelding,” said Swan. “We have started riding Ronnie, who had his bug this year at Will Rogers Downs (in Claremore, Okla.). He has won quite a few this summer.” Huckaby even rode some at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., this past spring.

“We like Ronnie,” Swan said. “He will be coming to Re*****on Park after the Prairie Meadows meet is done. We love to have David Cabrera on our horses, but everyone wants him. Ramon Vazquez (last year’s top rider at Re*****on Park) wins a lot on our horses and he will be back.”

Swan always points his stable to Re*****on Park and has been coming here since the first meet in 1988. Swan has started a total of 1,743 times in his thoroughbred racing career, winning 175 times, running second 182 times and finishing third another 206 times, for earnings of $3,651,613.

He has been known to produce some longshot winners (10-1 or higher) each meet and he did it twice last year, once with How About Bob (11-1) and once with a horse named Mirror (10-1). Vazquez rode How About Bob in that Sept. 12, 2025, race and Isaiah Wiseman rode Mirror on Nov. 7. How About Bob broke his maiden in the first race of his career, at Re*****on Park, on Sept. 12 last year and then ran third in the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile Stakes on Oct. 17. He also finished third in the Welder Stakes at WRD on March 10 this year.

Swan’s top runner ever, an Oklahoma-bred mare named Dicey, ran out $431,837 in her career and is now making foals for Swan. Dicey was a multiple stakes winner at Re*****on Park and concluded her racing career with a record of 52 starts, 10 wins, five seconds and nine thirds. He owned her in conjunction with Judith E. Lewis. Dicey was by sire Flat Out, from the Broken Vow mare Broken Blues.

“He’s a nice gelding,” said Swan. “We have started riding Ronnie, who had his bug this year at Will Rogers Downs (in Claremore, Okla.). He has won quite a few this summer.” Huckaby even rode some at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., this past spring.

“We like Ronnie,” Swan said. “He will be coming to Re*****on Park after the Prairie Meadows meet is done. We love to have David Cabrera on our horses, but everyone wants him. Ramon Vazquez (last year’s top rider at Re*****on Park) wins a lot on our horses and he will be back.”

Swan always points his stable to Re*****on Park and has been coming here since the first meet in 1988. Swan has started a total of 1,743 times in his thoroughbred racing career, winning 175 times, running second 182 times and finishing third another 206 times, for earnings of $3,651,613.

He has been known to produce some longshot winners (10-1 or higher) each meet and he did it twice last year, once with How About Bob (11-1) and once with a horse named Mirror (10-1). Vazquez rode How About Bob in that Sept. 12, 2025, race and Isaiah Wiseman rode Mirror on Nov. 7. How About Bob broke his maiden in the first race of his career, at Re*****on Park, on Sept. 12 last year and then ran third in the Oklahoma Classics Juvenile Stakes on Oct. 17. He also finished third in the Welder Stakes at WRD on March 10 this year.

Swan’s top runner ever, an Oklahoma-bred mare named Dicey, ran out $431,837 in her career and is now making foals for Swan. Dicey was a multiple stakes winner at Re*****on Park and concluded her racing career with a record of 52 starts, 10 wins, five seconds and nine thirds. He owned her in conjunction with Judith E. Lewis. Dicey was by sire Flat Out, from the Broken Vow mare Broken Blues.

BUEHRER FIRST INTO RE*****ON PARK AS STABLE AREA OPENS FOR THOROUHBREDS



OKLAHOMA CITY – Re*****on Park opened the stable gate early today, allowing trainers to bring horses onto the grounds to prepare for the upcoming season. Trainer Mark Buehrer was the first to arrive this morning with 17 horses at 4:48am.



Buehrer brought another 12 horses in a couple of hours later. His group of athletes were in barn C-7 and resting in their stalls before 9am. The early activity was by design.



“We wanted to get moved in before the heat,” Buehrer noted, referring to the scorching high 90-degree temperatures that would set in by midday. “We came in from a training center in Jones (east of Oklahoma City), we’ll be ready for training.”



The first morning for horses to work over the track is Wednesday, July 22.

Buehrer has enjoyed a solid 2026 to this point, winning 20 races at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore to start the year. He was second in the trainer standings there behind Scott Young who saddled 30 winners in the meet that ran from January 12 to early May 2. Buehrer has won 24 races overall this year, picking up four wins at the recently concluded meet at Fair Meadows in Tulsa.



Eireann continues to carry the flag for the Buehrer barn, the 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred competed three times at Will Rogers, winning once and running second twice. Her most recent effort was a runner-up spot in the $50,000 More Than Ready Stakes on April 21 in Claremore.



“She ran well with one win and two seconds,” Buehrer said. “She was beat by Letta’s Legacy in her last race but that is a really nice filly,” Buehrer said.



Now a 4-year-old Eireann has made 16 starts with six wins, five seconds, and a pair of thirds for total earnings of $217,000. The best of her three Re*****on Park wins came in the 2024 Slide Show Stakes for 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred fillies at one mile.



Buehrer has won 312 races overall in his career, according to Equibase, with total earnings of more than $4.5 million. He has 73 career victories at Re*****on Park.



The 2026 Re*****on Park Thoroughbred Season begins Friday, Aug. 21 and continues to Saturday, Dec. 19.
